Do you have to specifically request your old passport back ?

I dont have any old/expired passports - i usually change them every 4 or 5 years

Why is it that countries require to stamp pages (especially that cover a page) - why cant it be done electronically ???
I renewed mine last summer, they send both passports back to you.

Surely the only authority that would have this is Dubai immigration, UK Passport don't get that information - and I'm sure they would have told you that straight away, not waited a few days for a call back to inform you that.
Kix I don't know when why they wanted to call me back maybe the person who deals with these things where polishing there nails or getting there hair done who knows it is the britsh government after all.

Kix was making the point that they UK Passport Office only issue the passports, they don't do anything else and are clearly unable to help you.

To let you all know dubai police have now been informed they are now investigating the claims. I have also spoken with the bank and gave the contact name of the police officer who is dealing with it and in hope that this will be concluded very soon with the right decision being made.

But this question has gathered a very good debated on fraud not just in the uk but all over the world so thank you for everybody who has given there views.

I gave out about a thousand copies of my passport when I moved here sure they need more than that for a loan? Emirates ID, salary cert, job, visa etc? Surely the bank would have copies of all of that and would be able to trace said frauds yet relatively easily- unless he's done a bunk but even still there would be photos of not you on everything so easy to prove that it's not you? Having said that the amount of admin errors made out here is pretty appalling

I've dealt with fraud all over the world as part of my work, it's a major issue and a multi billion dollar industry. Dubai is crawling with fraud (was over there for a decade so I know!) given the somewhat lax regulations and enforcement.

Glad the OP seems to have sorted it, many don't and then find themselves in the clink... or worse.
