VAT on its way?

Re: VAT on its way?
I think it will come, however whether it will be in our life times is another question entirely....
I'm also curios as to how the implementation would be handled, for example if you use a base of say 15% and add that to the the normal cost of living (without increasing salaries), like the article comments, there are going to be a lot of people looking at moving on...

Dubai's USP is the lifestyle afforded by low tax living.
It would be interesting to see which areas VAT/taxation are introduced to. If it was on fuel for example it could be a good way of reducing congestion.

It was found that Dubai was the only emirate in the federation that was running in the red and the FNC had a heated debate on whether or not a 17.5% tax on luxury goods be introduced in Dubai. There was a unanimous rejection for the calls to implement the VAT and then we have heard nothing until today.
Rumours are also rife about the possible introduction of a 1% income tax on ALL U.A.E residents from next year.
Thats my two fils on the matter... very unlike the FNC to go back on such a controversial issue. Seems a little odd, seeing as how it caused alot of feathers to be ruffled the last time this issue was in the lime light.
Time will tell.....
