Urgent advice required!
Hi everyone,
I am in desperate need of some advice. I have been in the UAE now for 5 weeks and need to leave to go back to the UK (for the weekend) as a member of my family is ill. I do not have a residency visa stamp on my passport (but have an employment visa). I have heard that some people are stopped from exiting the UAE if their visa's are in process. Is this true? I do not have any employment stamps on my passport at all. I'm just worried that I will get to the airport and get stopped from leaving.
I have been to Oman twice and managed to exit the UAE then but i thought maybe that is different as I was driving so didn't have to pass through such strict checks etc...
I need to leave this Thursday but i would prefer not to tell my employer for personal reasons...(i dont want them to know about my problems home as im still on probation and id prefer to keep a completely clean slate)..
any advice would be much appreciated as i am in a real dilemma here!
xx

hey hun!
Do you still have your passport?
Also where are you in getting your res visa, have you had your medical?
the problem with you leaving the UAE while your res is in process is the cost your company will bare - they usually have to cancel and start again therefore you will need to inform your company of a quick departure to the UK and that you will return.
I told my new boss on the first day of my employment my hubby had lost his job - he asked me if i was going to leave and i said not if i can help it - im still employed and that was only last week!
Honesty might be your best bet here hun - talk to your PRO.
Im sure your company would be alot more peed off if you go off without a word then they have to pay out again to start the visa process?

My advice would be stay here. If we all decided to fly home whenever a family member became ill, we would never be able to settle. As an expat, you will have to learn to let go. Sorry to sound unsympathetic but that is my advice.

if someone is on their deathbed, they might just think its worth the trip back..

I just killed off all my family and friends before I came out here...takes a bit of doing but well worth it in the end...I can sleep at night knowing there is no need to go back home in a hurry...

my new boss had to do the same thing when his residence permit was in process - only he didn't know, and no-one told him, there might be a problem! he got to the airport and no way they were going to let him leave, he missed his flight, had to return to his hotel and stay one more night and get the senior bosses to courier letters of authorization etc etc etc to the airport.
so as MrsHap has said, you are probably better to tell them - you don't need to tell them why, just that you have to attend to some urgent business that can't be done remotely or something like that.

I have no idea as to what the computers may or may not show up when they scan your passport at the airport, but...
You will still have your visitors visa stamped in your passsport (allows you 60 days). You're still within in that timeframe.
Whenever I leave the country which a very regular occurance, I just hand over my passport with the entry visitor visa page open so they can stamp it quickly, then they don't have to flick through the pages and thus find your employment visa (unless they're on adjacent pages).
Anyway you say you've left the UAE twice to go to Oman, from their point of view you've still left the country - there was nothing stopping you leaving Oman via air, boat etc.
Personally I'd listen to the others on here regarding visa requirements etc as they'll know a lot more than me.
However if you don't get the definitive answers you're after and you really need to go, just go and don't start sweating when you hand over your passport... unless you want an internal 'inspection' for whatever they think you might have

I must agree with Lionheart. One of the things about life overseas is missing stuff, like this.
Good luck in all cases!

Awful situation to be in - best to speak to your PR and find out.
I'm sure if your company does not lose any money (or if agree to compensate them for additional costs incurred) and you're not missing work, it should be fine (?)
