There's a few inaccuracies in this BBC report e.g the number of threat levels is wrong, but yeah, as always, take care out there.

Geopgraphically, there shouldn't really be any surprise that the UAE gets a high rating. I personally have little faith in the UAE security services (are there any?) or the police in being able to spot or foil some dasterdly plot.

Note that the current UK terror level is Severe.

I am a bit sceptical of the threat level warning in the UK to be honest. Having a 'severe' level is a useful political tool to justify new terror laws, which are really just an excuse to hold anyone they choose. Who can forget Walter Wolfgang, the octagenarian dragged out under terror legislation for heckling Tony Blair at the labour conference. A politician's definition of terror is pretty broad, and seems to extend to anyone who publicly protests anything the government is trying to do, unless they do so in a form acceptable to the government (i.e. something low profile).

That said, there is less political capital for the government and security services to obtain from hyping up the threat in the UAE. So one must assume that they have some reason for doing this.

Either way, it is not bad advice to remember that it pays to be vigilant wherever you are, and that the risk to Brits in the UAE is amplified somewhat as there is less 'safety in numbers'.

It certainly highlights to me why I would not invest any more here than I could afford to write off. If there ever was a terror attack, the bubble would most certainly pop overnight.

Reading the official warning advice on the FCO website, I reckon (in Dubai's case) THIS is far more important advice...... Rattle Snake anyone???

You should exercise normal precautions to avoid exposure to HIV/AIDS

On the FCO website, it does say...

The overall level of the advice has not changed.

So whilst there has been an update for UAE, the 'terror level' has not changed.

What surprises me is how many Brits there are here now - 120,000 compared with 60,000 two years ago......

its like benadorm here now, they let all the undesirables in. Not like when i first came here, you really had to be someone to make it in Dubai...the standards have very much slipped. I look at all the lowlifes here now with their leather skin and peroxide hair and think, glad i moved to Abu Dhabi...

back O/T i still try to avoid routine. Its routine that will kill you, take different routes to work, always check your car. Unfortunately the bad guys have moved on somewhat from attaching a sarny box under your car during the night.

UAE ihv is one of the safest places to be. Although it offers many nice juicy potential targets, if anything happened here, most expats would go home and the economy would collapse.... and I am sure all effort$ are exerted to ensure that this unthinkable situation doesn't happen.
