Oh shush. I happen to know Eeyore.

I provide masses of technical info here for free and have been doing so for ages. It is not touting.

Whats happens to tax credits and payments to children under 16 - do they stop as well as you are no longer resident in the UK or do they continue.

They stop. You can't claim a benefit if you are non-resident.

So if you want to continue your benefits it's best to throw away your passport and adopt a middle eastern sounding name - not speaking English also helps I've heard

Does anyone know how long it should take the HMRC to make a decision on tax free status?

Apparently the technical team received mine on 13th May and have yet to send me any confirmation either way. I have tried calling but apparently the technical team doesn't take any calls.

No one gets benefits if they are not resident in the UK.

I understand that they are months behind in processing info. If you are no longer in the Uk I presume you are receiving gross income, so providing you are eligible to register as non-resident here really shouldn't be a problem. If you hunt through HMRC site you'll find a section with email contacts, so you could try that.

Unfortunately I am paid in UK (UK contract but based in UAE) so still doing PAYE.

A colleague of mine applied recently and received a reply within 3 weeks, the people on the phone are as useful as choclate teapots.

Hi everyone, i have been living abroad for the past 3 years (since dec 05) and planning to return to the UK March/April 2009. By that time, i would have been outside the Uk for 3years + and for 3 full fiscal years. However i am so confused whether the taxation of income earned outside the uk applies to a 3 year period or a 5 year period. I mean in order to be non-resident (and hence not to pay tax on offshore income), i have to be outside for 3yrs or 5 yrs??? i read the HMR&C website and it says clearly that non-resident - you need only to be outside 3yrs+, but here you are referring to 5yr rule???

Pls help. I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I havent worked in the UK this tax year but have received a redundancy payment below the 30,000 taxable level. I am working in Dubai on a temp contract which I suspect will end at the end of December as I work in property and dont expect to be kept on. I was considering returning to the UK. Am I right in thinking that I wont be taxed on the income I have earned here as I will still be under the maximum number of days this tax year? - Much of what I have earned is in an off shore account now. I havent yet declared myself non resident in the UK as I wasnt sure if I would work or not in Dubai (and made a mess of the form and decided I could leave it until I go back there in December for christmas - not anticipating the property downturn here).
