UK Driving license - photocard expiry
Anyone done a renewal as an expat recently?
technically not allowed etc. This I know but lets face it a UAE license is worth sweet **** all anywhere else in the world so a UK one would be handy.
Anyone know if they do actually check with HM customs and robbery etc?

Legally I can't hire a car in the uk on the uk License but I've had two hire companies ask for it instead of my Uae one! Having both is handy.

This is definitely bb2's favourite topic and we all know it's not strictly legal and that it isn't to be used for hiring cars in the UK, but it would still be interesting to know how it can be done so if anyone knows please share...

def bb's fave topic.
DVLA told me over the phone that there is nothing at all illegal about a UK citizen using a UK license to rent a car in the UK even if they are non-resident.
If you want to challenge what DVLA told me, please provide some hard evidence, not rumour.

well I still have the old paper license with my UK address of 25 years ago. UK hire companies don't bat an eyelid.

It was reported a while back that changing to the photocard type would be made compulsory in 2015. I don't know if the government is proceeding with this or not.

If your license expires whilst abroad and one day, years down the line, you return....will you just get given another one or will you have to re-test etc?

if you card expires whilst you are non resident, its fine, there is no 1k fine to pay like people who are living in uk, when you go back to live in uk, you just tell dvla that and they will just re-issue a new photocard no problem.... you dont need to redo your test etc.
