UK Car Insurance
 

I have been offered a car in the UK which would save myself and my wife hiring cars when we return – approx 6 weeks per year. We are both non residents but do have a permanent UK address. Anybody know if we will be able to get car insurance?

Yes you can, but you will have to speak to a specialist general insurance broker. None of the cheap online companies will assist. It will also be rather more costly than policies available for UK residents.

We got around this by getting the car insured by my in-laws and having us put on as named drivers when we were over. Be aware though, that the main policy holder's no claims cannot be taken into account when a named driver is not their spouse. We found out - thankfully not the hard way - that this means that a policy is null and void in the case of an accident *if* the price quoted takes into account a no claims discount.

I am now in the UK, so am the main policy holder and can put Mr Kitty on it as a named driver for up to 30 days at a time for a one-off fee of about £40 a pop.

Can you elaborate on that Kitty? How did you find that our re named drivers and no claims policy?

I would be careful on this and double check as that is what I have been doing for years (being put down as a named driver on my mums policy), however, last time I was back she rang up and they said that they couldn't put a non UK resident down as a named driver. I am not sure if this is a new law or if it was just her policy but it may be worth a check. It is better to be safe than get stung.

Also, on a separate question, my mate has a car in the UK that has been have extensive work done for the last year. He is a resident over here and his parents and brothers live in Europe. As the car is now finished he wants to a) run it in before he takes it out of the UK (I.e. away from the engine specialist and b) to Swisterland to be stored for use as a mountain pass / n'burg ring toy, however, he doesn't have a UK address and as such cannot tax or insure it, so he is wondering how he can take it out of the country. Would you be able to trailer it as long as you have proof of ownership (V5) and then reregister it in Swisterland?

Anyone??
