UAE Pre-existing condition
Hello all
I have been offered a job in Abu Dhabi, but I have concerns about health care and the possible costs. I had a kidney transplant in the UK about 5 years ago and attend a renal outpatients clinic on the NHS. I can get private medical insurance in the UK but it will not cover expenses associated with my kidney treatment as it is classed as a pre-existing condition. I know in the UAE they don't really have a "NHS" body. What I would like to know is, if I move and take up the job offer, what will be the best way to get treatment out there? I assume they have private hospitals, does anyone know how much these costs? I don't think private medical insurance will cover me for any kidney related treatment. The only other option I can think of is flying back to the UK every month to attend outpatient clinics here? Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks |
Re: UAE Pre-existing condition
once you move out here you are non resident and shouldnt use the nhs for treatment, they are in their right to charge you as a foreigner. you would need to talk with your employer as all health insurance cover is different, they sometimes cover existing conditions and sometimes dont, nobody can tell you as you need to ask the insurance provider. flying back every month would be a huge expense, take for the holiday next week people have been quoted 7,000aed for a plane ticket, which is over 1k, so you would want to spend 12k aed a year on tickets?

Re: UAE Pre-existing condition
Thanks for your responses, I believe cover is available, but at a cost. I will have to weigh up the economics of moving and paying for health care to see if its worth my while.

Thanks Only large schemes where the employer is paying for the additional benefit are on a MHD basis and if that is not the case then you will not get cover for anything related to your kidneys. Whilst private insurers will cover some pre-existing conditions that will be excluded. The quality of healthcare in the UAE is generlaly very good, but it is expensive so if you aren't going to be insured you need to establish whether a requirement to pay for the treatment yourself still makes the move a viable option. Hope that helps. |
Hi Lawbean,
Have you been able to resolve this? Did you take the job? I am in the same position now - I was offered a job in abu dhabi and the current health insurance provided by my future employer does not cover prescription benefits and I have a preexisting condition (multiple sclerosis). Were you able to find a provider to cover you? Trying to get information from these insurance companies and my provider has been a nightmare. Any idea about health insurance packages? What about medical insurance for preexisting conditions? I am debating moving to AD and the insurance being offered by my future employer is not enough to cover what I need. I want to get my own policy once I relocate but am afraid it will be too costly. Should i go through a broker? Any recommendations? |

Initially I moved as a secondment, still a British national so I was able to have my NHS medication delivered there. If you are planning to move permanently (I.e. Not eligible for NHS treatment), it's a bit more trickier. I contacted various health providers and gave a description of my full medical condition and on going treatment. I received a heafty quote, however my firm agreed to pay part of this so was more bearable. I would speak to your employer about the options. As companies have private medical insurance benefits they will be best placed to give you an idea of your options. I have spoken to others here who have conditions and one way or another there always seems to be a workable solution. |

It is hard to get information from providers, I would give them a call and speak direct to a broker or sales rep. They get these queries all the time and there are packages out there that cover pre exising conditions depending on the severity. |
