UAE execution
A rather under-reported story.
"A Sri Lankan expatriate was executed in the UAE on Tuesday for the murder of an Emirati resident, Arabian Business has confirmed.
Ravinda Krishna Pillai was convicted of premeditated murder after he fatally ran over the Emirati in an SUV during an argument between the two.
The execution, believed to have been by firing squad, took place this morning in Sharjah.
Executions are rare in the UAE and a leading official told Arabian Business authorities had made every effort to persuade the victim’s family to accept Pillai’s offer of blood money but they insisted on the death penalty being enforced."

Re: UAE execution
A friend who was visiting was asking about the death penalty just two days ago. I thought that it no longer happened 'officially'.

Re: UAE execution
Whether we feel the death penalty is appropriate or not the fact is that the death penalty applied in the UAE is based on if the family on if the victim accepts 'blood money' from the perpetrator or not. Only a pardon from a ruling sheikh can override this.
In theory you could be executed for accidental manslaughter because the victim's family doesn't like you even when offered blood money. This is not justice - it is revenge.

Neither system is perfect.

Re: UAE execution
Subject to the crime and the amount of doubt over the question of guilt I am not against the death penalty in society.
The singer from the Welsh band is a prime example.

I'd rather pay someone to pull him apart over a couple of weeks with a pair of pliers.

Re: UAE execution
I get the cost difference. But I'd rather see people sit and rot in jail going stir crazy than killed.
A: Too much chance for mistakes to be made and innocent people to be killed.
B: (As Meow says) Murder is murder, state-sanctioned or not.

Re: UAE execution
Why? If a life sentence actually means life, why is that acceptable but execution not? I accept that in some instances there is the possibility of a miscarriage of justice, but in those cases where that possibility does not exist (ie where there is incontrovertible evidence), I fail to see the difference.
