Hi guys
Currently on shortlist to get job in Bahrain over the next 4-8 weeks. job seems excellent, good pay, allowances etc
However, one thing I have been able to find quite yet on all the various expat forums out there
1) is it easy to get English/European TV channels?
(cable, bring your own satellite dish/sky box, or local provider?)
2) having just forked out £1500 on a new LCD TV in the UK, does UK TV work in Bahrain or do i need to buy new TV locally (different PAL system? in Bahrain?)
sorry, but I gotta see the footie etc
Hope any of you can help!

Hello mate, welcome to the forum.

Yep, cble TV is readily available in the ME. Main providers there would be the same as they are here:
Showtime: www.showtimearabia.com
Orbit: http://www.kingofsat.net/en/pack-orbit.php
This might be useful as well:
TV channels available in BAH:
http://www.lyngsat-address.com/tv/Bahrain.html
They carry ALL imaginable channels on these 2 networks and you can easily watch the footie live on either of these networks.
As for your new telly, it will be fine. We work on the same voltage as the UK, 220/240V, so you will have no problems.

Hope that helps. Enjoy the forum!

Re the telly it self, i was not so much worried about the voltage, but more about the tuner itself.
As far as I know, although UK/Europe both have PAL, they differ e.g. from UK to continent, e.g. UK TV does not work in Holland .
Hence the question, does a UK TV work in Bahrain? Did you bring yours?

As far as I know, it shoulf be fine to use your UK telly over here, ie, in BAH, but let someone who has brought a telly out answer that one for ya.

If you have any other q's, fire away and I will see if I can help.

cheers Bob, that is exactly what I was referring to... both continental Europe and UK are both PAL, but they are not the same.
I suppose if you you have a sat dish and your own set top box, it is irrelevant as you use the tuner of the STB rather than the TV

Where there is a will - there is a way. You'll make it work somehow!
Or maybe you could store or sell your LCD in Brit-land and get a new one in Bahrain for cheap. Our choice was to give all our stuff away when we moved... but then again our TV was worth maybe £50.

Getting really anoraky, the only difference between the various flavours of PAL is the location of the audio subcarrier. This means that if you plugged your UK TV into a Bahraini aerial socket, you'd get a picture but no sound.
The good news is, this is only a problem if you're using the tuner inside the TV. As long as you get a local satellite or cable box, and connect it to your TV via SCART or phono leads, you'll get picture and sound as normal. Same with local DVD players, VCRs, games consoles, whatever; connect them via AV leads and not the aerial socket and they'll work fine.
