Turn by turn navigation on Iphone/Ipad?

Has anyone got the turn by turn navigation to work in the UAE using Apple's built in maps?

If you buy a dedicated app for that purpose, which one is recommended?

Thank you.

You can do it using the Google Maps app - tried it once in RAK and it seemed to work fine. Not sure how up-to-date it's kept with Dubai (or Abu Dhabi to a certain extent) developments and road changes though.

google maps works like a real gps. Better then a Garmin as you can look up by any saved/pinned location that exists on their maps.

Can you not get "CityMaps2Go"? It allows you to download google maps by area to use the GPS offline. It was free for a while, don't know if it still is....but the maps can be pretty large, especially if you want all the POI type info.

CityMaps2Go might be useful as it can preload maps but it doesn't give turn by turn directions. The maps are from openstreetmap.

Won't work on an ipad (I think...), but for an android phone, OSMAnd is excellent. Free maps (limited to 12 downloads, but the complete UAE is one download), turn by turn directions etc. The maps are as accurate as my Garmin. It doesn't look quite as slick, but it's not far off and is free.

Good app called navfree available on android, not sure about apple. But it works in offline mode, only on gps so no need for a data connection. You can pre-download each country map before hand.
It's as good as garmin

Yeah actually I find it great (especially for free), I have used it fairly heavily through the ME and Europe. Better in Europe though obviously. Where it struggles, I noticed, is to find addresses, so sometimes I have had to locate them and add them manually to the device. But on the move it gives good directions.

That's good. I think over where I am, open maps thingy it uses, has some serious bugs.

One spot for instance, heading down to PA, to use the TBZ bridge instead of the GW to avoid traffic and it had you go through the town, then down and over the TBZ, turn around and go back, then 100 miles over to use the GWB as a detour :D

We use CoPilot on our iPad. It's a paid app, and you have to pay extra to get the Middle East maps, but we don't have a data package and CoPilot works fine without internet access.
