Agree ! I had a taxi (Al Ghazal) from town to Al Raha Beach Hotel and it was Dh78 metered. I know some of the taxis turn off their meter after midnight and it's a case of haggling but it is still illegal. We got a taxi from the Beach Hotel about 12.30am (Dhs 10 !! OK!) and were travelling up Hamdan Street and the driver was stopped by the Police. The driver went into a panic and said "tell them it's metered" they asked us how much the driver was charging - we said it was a meter (by then the driver had switched it on) - needless to say we got out later and paid him the Dhs 2 on the meter. I think there is a light on a taxi which shows occupied / unoccupied linked to the meter and that was the trigger for the Police stopping it.
