Re: Tax
I looked at a role in HK before that had about 8 or 10% tax which the company wasn't paying for me, but once the net figure was working out I didn't really care about the gross figure too much.
However I am sure it would be different if I started with 0% then got a new tax foisted onto me afterwards.

Plus, any wise employer (or wise HR dept -- sorry, I really don't know what made me say that ) puts in an employment contract at the start words to the effect that any change in, or imposition of, income tax is the employee's problem. Any any wise prospective employee negotiates a clause that it's the employer's problem. Which is when the battle of wits ensues. I don't even know what the rate of income tax is here.

That's the point.

For us, depends on location around the world and type of person we're hiring.

Re: Tax
I pay 21% territorial income tax in Malaysia. But the cost of living is much cheaper - e.g. 4 storey semi in gated compound with 6 bedrooms and 5 minutes commute to work is 4500 aed; main meal at lunch time (rice, chicken, sauce, 3 veg servings) is 10-12 aed.
100% car duty is a pain, but the depreciation is limited so you only lose a normal amount.
So income tax in itself isn't bad, it's what the net will get you that counts.

So why are we here? Numbers are declining no doubt, but there's still a significant number of Europeans who make things happen in the Middle East. Nepotism, racism and Anglo/Europhilia play a part, but surely the rest of the equation still holds good. No?
