Re: Struggling
Hi dave, sorry to hear youre having a tough time, but youre only a week in and no doubt having a bit of a coulture shock as well as missing family. Remember its a much smaller world than it used to be,things like skype are handy so you can get to see people back home.
Really try to get your self out there though, go to the gym or to a bar after work especially if youre out there on your own.
Remember all the expats were in the same boat as you at one point, so just go over and ask if you can join them. Join a club or something, ask what people from work are doing after work, try not too sit at home talking to people from back home too much, it will just make you relive missing them over and over.
Give it time and no doubt youll love it!

Of course it does Dave. You got to make your life all new now. Go out with colleagues, see what's going on, meet new people, do different things...you are only a week old, stick with those who have been for a while, and they will help you. Everybody will understand how you feel. good luck, and chin up!

Hi Dave11, being in Saudi a lot of activities happen on the Expat compounds, BBQ's, Parties etc... Speak to colleagues or look on some local expat sights (like this) I am sure you will find something going on ..... Good Luck

What helps me keep sane is to book my next holiday and flights, knowing I have some time in the real world to look forward to.

And your advice is going to help, given your lack of experience. I went to the Middle East in 1982, so I do think I have some knowledge about things. How about you?

And what advice have you given? Oh thats right, none.... also, 32yrs ago, i know the country hasnt changed as much as some places, but still think you might be a little out of date. Unless you can at least try to contribute, probably best to keep quiet.

To the OP - yes it will get easier, speak to any other expats you bump into, you need to get known to start being invited to the social functions, once it starts you'll be fine.
Hang in there and good luck.
