Shipping from UK to Dubai

Hello,

Can anyone recommend which shipping company i should use to ship approx. 100kg of personal effects from UK to Dubai?

I've got quotes ranging from £400 to £1,700 (DHL) and am not sure why there's such a massive range.

Obviously i need to check out their insurance policies - is there anything else i need to watch out for?

Thanks,

R

Depends how quickly you want them to arrive. I suspect DHL is expensive because it will be overnight.

I shipped about 100kg of used personal effect from Manchester airport to DXB. I phoned round, and Menzies as handling agent using Lufthansa were cheapest. I kept costs down be delivering to the cargo area at Manchester airport, and likewise collecting at the DXB end. Only took 3 days which fitted in nicely with me delivering at the UK end, flying out to DXB and collecting here.

Thanks - i should have said i've requested 1 months storage aswell whilst i find somewhere to live so i guess that puts the price up - to be honest work are paying so i'm not too concerned about cost, more about loosing my stuff!

Whilst i'm at it, i'm new to this whole forum world, can anyone tell me if it's possible to search for your threads or how you keep track of them?!

Shipping is about 18 days port to port UK to jebel ali, plus customs (1 week average - or a month in August when everyone is on holiday).
I regularly have goods shipped here for work.

For peace of mind, I would get a 'to door quote in dubai' that includes all the customs malarky taken care of - otherwise you will find yourself running around like a blue arsed fly once you are here, getting shoved from pillar to post with 'procedure'.

In the contents, ensure everything is listed individually, with no reference to any flammables, such as oil lamp (just put lamp) hot oil foot spa (put foot spa) etc, otherwise your shipment will be flagged either before sending or at port for inspection, which will be when your trouble really starts...

Seeing as time is not of the essence, you may as well send it sea freight. While weight is an indication of price, freight works on volumetric weight, so it can be cheaper to send smaller heavier objects, than large light objects.

How much space does it take up? I kept my stuff in the hotel room whilst I was looking for a place to live. No storage charges and less chance of things being pilfered.

Clearing used personal effects, 100kg, at DXB airport took me less than an hour and I had no one with me - It was reasonably straightforward - Just need the AWB (Air Way Bill), Passport, List of Contents. The people there were more than happy to help - very relaxed.

A little bonus food money for the fork lift truck man and the loaders got my stuff from the warehouse extra quick!!

You had a good day. I know people that have had extremely alternative experiences.

With regards to sea freight, the reason it took my stuff 12 weeks, as opposed to more like 6-8 (door to door) was that I only took up part of a container, thus you wait for the rest of the container to be filled by others. The company I went with claimed I just missed the first sailing so had to wait for their next ship.

there are plenty of freight forwarders who specialise in shipping LCL's. should be no problem getting stuff from the UK to Dubai.

I had some sports equipment shipped over from Hamburg to Dubai and it took 3-4 weeks. These modern container vessels are pretty quick.

Normally you will get 7 days to collect your goods from the port. after that you will start paying demurrage.

i can recommend a company in the UK called Allfrieght - very helpful, very efficient, costs around £2.50 per kg to send via air - which takes less than a week. the provide boxes, packaging, deliver and collect everything - or can pack if you want.

personally i had no problems at dubai airport to collect my stuff - just remember to take cash don't try to pay for anything with a card!

all their details are on their website.

happy moving!

All I can suggest is not going over the weight limit with Emirates in terms of cases. I had to pay £250 on the way over here! :curse:
