I remember reading Hans Hass, Under the Red Sea when I was into diving many years ago. I never go swimming too deep these days, my shark phobia gets worse as I get older. I have total respect for them and we should stay out of their way.

Sharks are misunderstood. I've been diving a while and never had a problem with them.

The only sharks I've come across in Dubai have been of the 'human' variety

Most shark attacks occur within three to six feet of water - it's extremely rare to be attacked in deep waters. The best way to avoid attacks is by not swimming around dusk or dawn and keeping out of murky water - most attacks are a case of curiosity and/or mistaken identity.

I keep out of the sea generally as it's full of things that bite, sting and pull you under...I was married once already and don't need any more bites and stings :p

They happen in deep water, shallow water, wherever. Only ever swim in the beach when it's daylight - coming from one of the favourite stomping grounds of the Great White has made me too aware that they're there. A guy was chomped in half about fifteen years ago on a reef that I used to snorkel on most days when I was younger - the water was quite shallow.......gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

Yes they happen in all waters...but are most common in shallow waters statistically.

Anything that can eat someone in several bites should be treated with extreme caution ;)

My son is a shark freak and watches shark attack videos all the time - this is one of his favourites. Two great whites attack a surfer in South Africa and the guy survives with just a hand injury.

Nine year old boys are into any kind of prehistoric animals - he actually loves all animals but big man eating ones are on the favourites list.

Have you taken him to the Al Ain Palace Hotel Zoo yet?

We went to Al Ain Zoo but not the Palace Hotel Zoo. He was fortunate enough to have a mate in Dubai whose dad is a vet and he took the boys to one of the Sheikh's private palaces to go shooting at his indoor range - they got to see his private zoo before they went to the shooting range. He apparently has big cats, crocs, giant tortoises etc, but the favourite that day was the meerkats.
