Default Second Hand car purchase/registration

When you buy a second hand car privately does the existing car registration and insurance go with it or do you need to take out a new insurance for 13 months and when you both go along they restart the registration in the buyers name? thanks

I think Car reg starts from scratch...and don't think there's any refund for 'unused time' on the original owners registration.

Insurance also starts from scratch under your name (buyer)...and the seller will 'probably' get a refund of the unused time for their insurance.

I'm just going through this now. The insurance doesn't transfer or roll over, the registration appears to be optional, i.e. you can get new plates or keep the existing on - although in general the plate lives with the owner not the car.
