Default Saudi Arabia to lift ban on women drivers

Any of you in Saudi have heard about this? Given the pace of reform there, how soon can this happen?

They would have a solid case for keeping women out of cars if they come to witness Arabian Ranches (especially roundabout) during the school run.

It looks like Saudi is on a long slippery slope now... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7201643.stm

Whatever next???

That ban only ever applied to LOCAL women - plenty of Western women have been coming here on business for years, and staying at hotels as per anywhere else........ abayas and all.

From what I've heard about the driving in Saudi, I hope the ban isn't lifted. I look forward to having both my hands free to cover my eyes as I'm driven through the danger and madness - or maybe I'll just get a burqa!!

They've obviously started driving already - we were overtaken by a car being driven by a woman yesterday - she was local.

Don't think the driving here is any worse than Dubai . . .

I was in hillbilly country in Saudi Arabia from 1997 to 2000 and it was being discussed then but only for women over 40 years old. Red lights are not liked as they just seem to go through them and it is "Me first" when traffic stops at the lights as everyone turning left have to be at the front of the queue. One day, maybe never

I know that quite a few Saudi women drive dressed like men.....trouble starts when they get into an accident and the ambulance arrives to take care of them

Yes, seriously - she was driving fast, so we gave her the benefit of the doubt and thought perhaps she was rushing a sick child to the hospital . . .

Or mayb it was just a trannie ?

Whow knows ?

I hope it happens, but we'll see...

Can't say it's our focus right now.
