It can depend on your passport/colour. I've personally seen Arabic guys promoted over far more qualified/experienced Europeans and Indians.

There's no such thing as an average salary out here. Everyone is on different money, sometimes *wildly* different money, even people with similar jobs in the same department. And yes, it's got a lot to do with where you're from, sadly.
