Default Rumour, 2 months jail = no more debt

So... a friend has a police case imminent against her. 4 months out of work in UAE and can not afford her monthly credit card repayment. The bank has delayed the police case due to a certain someone in the bank pursuasion but she is contemplating going to jail. Her reason? She told me that people in Abu Dhabi are now serving 2 months sentences and their debts get cleared.

She has failed to provide further info so who else has heard this?

In my opinion, yes, it's true, but you get out of jail if you promise to pay the money back...One can pay AED1,000/month and get done with it...

Remains to be confirmed by someone else though...

How nasty is the debt that you'd rather do time over there than a runner?

Anyway, if anyone is able to confirm this, perhaps could do with a wiki entry going over the whole debt situation.

Can't you just promise to pay the bank 1000 a month BEFORE you get locked up??

How has she managed to stay in UAE for 4 months without a job? Is her status still legal? If she's still legal I say get on the next plane as she will probably be deported after a jail sentence. If she has become illegal it's a different story.

This used to be the case that if you served a min of 2 months they would release you on the condition that you paid the money back, you would also be blacklisted in the central babnk so that no bank would touch you in the future.

I am almost 100% sure that this is no longer the case and that you remain in jail until the sentance is complete or until you can pay the money off.
