Thanks for the info people, it has been really useful.

Can anyone suggest what kind of 'expert' I might use to help me make the right decisions, get my house in order (forgive the pun) before I come back?

Honestly, speak to the tax people (Inland Revenue) . There is a department which deals with non residents. You'll need your NI number. I have found them to be very helpful and even if there is a technical question that needs an expert consideration, they get back to you.

Nothing wrong with doing as B 123 suggests (if everything is above board).

Alternatively, an accountant, tax advisor or IFA who specialises in tax will do.

You can also ask Meow or Norm here as they are both qualified IFAs I believe...

See the following link, in particular Qs 3, 5 and 8:

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/faqs_capgains.htm

However, the rules, and their interpretation, change from year to year, and for something like this you need to get professional advice.

Your point regarding CGT having been non-resident for over 5 TAX years is correct. Sadly some other incorrect info in this thread.

(From a professional adviser)

Note that not many UK accountants are familair with non-residency rules as they don't deal with this on a regular basis. You need to speak to someone who is a) qualified and b) experienced in these matters. (I am both)
