Return to Bahrain

Hi all
I currently live and work in Saudi Arabia in Al Khobar, I have not visited Bahrain for a few months now and I have a short break coming up. I have though about visiting Bahrain again as have recently been taking R & R trips to Dubai and wanted to drive this time.
I assume its safe now for UK expates to travel in the popular areas of Bahrain and have looked at the Al Bander Beach resort.
Any one got any comments on the place? And can you tell me if the ladies (for my wife not for me! )swimwear rules are draconian or liberal ie: are bikinis the norm?
Any help much appreciated.

Mick

Bahrain is fine for a break, and Al Bander is a brilliant place to go. Decent prices, good food and nice pool with a bar. The lagoon is okay I guess but seems a bit murky for my liking. Bikinis are completely acceptable..

It's all good. Was there last weekend.

A bit of military presence but other than that it was fine.

Been over three times this month, not a single problem.

In many ways it was better than pre 'troubles', 20 minutes on the Causeway and the bars didn't seem to be full of pi$$ed up Saudi idiots!!

Stayed in a new hotel last weekend, 'The K Hotel' reasonably priced and not too bad. Worth a look!

Can't say I know where Amwaj is, if you drive from the Gulf Hotel to the Ramee with Rock Bottoms in it is on the left about 150m before you get to Rockbottoms.

Re: Return to Bahrain

Just as you all you parched expats in Saudi thought it was safe to come across the water.... be aware of the following demonstrations planned for this weekend in Bahrain to coincide with the end of the state of safety. For those of you who dont know Bahrain then the districts affected are most of the inhabited island. They may happen, they may not, may be allowed to protest peacefully, may get squashed again, who knows. I would fly to Dubai this weekend if I were you :(

We are aware of the following planned demonstrations:
Wednesday 1 June: Widespread potential protests including areas of Jidhafs, Sanabis, Karanah, Karbabad, Abo Saibah, Maqabah, Old Bilad, Abo Quwah, Sehlah, Diraz, Bin Jamrah, Sar, Karzakan, Malkyah, Nawidarat, Eker, Tubli, Sitra (all areas) Neaam, Manama, AlDair, Aali, Juffair and Hamad Town roundabouts 1, 4, 2, 22.). Online sources indicate that all protests will be at 1600.
A pro US march, to thank the US for the Obama speech, will head to US navy base in Juffair with meeting places set for the area between Al - Nasser Club and Pizza Hut.
Friday 3 June: Marches have also been announced for this date but no details are available.
British nationals travelling within Bahrain should maintain a high level of security awareness, particularly in public places and on major highways, avoiding large crowds and demonstrations. Whilst the British Embassy seeks to ensure the information we give is as reliable as possible, we cannot confirm that all such events will go ahead as listed
