Am waiting for some one to mention DVD lady or Bit Torrent.... Curious that you picked 2 such specific examples.... is film noir a genre in the naughties or a stylistic / period reference? What was the last good film noir I wonder? Too obvious to say LA Confidential? |

there's no real rental market here. Carrefour will sell recentish movies for as low as 29dhs. Virgin with a lot better depth of prduct will be more pricey, but not so bad.

The film noir genre is a vast pool really, I was referring to the expressionism movement from which film noir draws its influence, movies like The Golem, Nosferatu and M and directors such as Fritz Land and Otto Preminger (directors who inspired Hitchcock) Also the proto noir movies and classic noir movies from the 40's & 50's that have inspired most murder/mystery movies of today. I've tried on torrents but no luck there, I wouldn't mind buying movies either but it's just hard to find them here. The most recent post classic noir movie I can think of is Layer Cake. Here are two links.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_noir http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_film_noir |

www.amazon.co.uk - they deliver here, loved Layer Cake by the way ;)

BC - Did you see the alternative endings??
I did think of amazon but shipping is a bit much. I lucked out on ebay the other night. A guy was selling his collection of dvds and I got close to 400 movies, now the question is how do I get them here. Does customs really screen movies that come via mail, if so mine are going to be there indefinitely? |
Re: Renting Classic movies - Dubai
You are in the wrong country... you obviously know your movies. Virgin is not bad for main stream, however if you are into this depth of specialist movies, then the internet and delivery are the only likely way you'll get these out there.
Customs don't check everything, but there is always a chance... You know way more than I, however Frtiz Lang's M and Metropolis are classics. More recently Chinatown, LA Confidential were great. Did you see Hollywoodland? Layer Cake is very good, it wouldn't have immediately struck me as obviously film noir... - the book is great too. Momento was a great noir influenced movie.

Virgin's selection leaves a lot to be desired. The movies I'm looking for are very hard to find even at places that stock classic movies.

No Country for Old Men is not dissimilar to Fargo and another Mexican border type yarn, the name of which escapes me. Personally I think American Beauty is a better example than L.A. Confidential which lacked something for me. Watched Sixth Sense again on MBC2 the other evening...a modern classic.
Sixth Sense was great - I liked "The Village", too - don't understand why the critics gave it a panning??? |
