Relocating to Dubai

Hi There

We are moving to Dubai in March 05 and really looking forward to it.

We were wondering if our tv and other electrical goods will work in Dubai because they have three pins sockets but not sure about the voltage.

Thank You
Graham

Hello Graham. Welcome to the forum! :D

Yep..... we run on 210/220 V ...... exactly the same as the UK. U will be just fine! Look thru the FAQ threads for more info. They really are very useful.

A good website for info is:

www.dubaicityguide.com

Hope that helps. F

Re: Relocating to Dubai

Can you also use telephones from the uk? Do they have the same phone sockets?

Can't wait to come to Dubai. Is it easy to find apartments as I have heard that they are in great demand and short supply.

I will be working on Shiekh Zayad Road (between Emirates Towers & the Dusit Hotel) and was wondering if anyone knew of any apartments in that area.

Many thanks
Graham

Welcome to the site, can't help to much, but there are a load of links on apartments etc, any luck with those? also the local papers, there's a link for them too somewhere in the faq's. Though it doesn't sound easy getting places these days...

Sorry guys,
bad news your UK TV and VCR will not work in Dubai, good news your DVD player will.
The TV system here is PAL so your tapes from the UK will play but the player will not be able to record programmes and your TV will either tune in the picture but not the sound or sound but no picture because the sound and picture synchronisation here is different, the same problem if you moved to Europe by the way (I know I tried it).
TV's are cheap in Dubai plus if you are lucky you may be able to buy a good second hand one cheap from someone who is leaving (going back to the UK maybe!)

No probs Graham. Not sure bout phone sockets, but I know that u can easily get the plug points changed here.... have done it with a Russian made telephone once. Its a very simple procedure. Not a big deal really.

Finding apartments can be a trying experience as they r in short supply. Finding an apartment on SZR is easy if u have a massive rent allowance as part of ur salary package. 2 beds are 60K - 75K, 3 beds are 80K -95K. These are prices in AED/Month..... these wud be GBP 8500 - 10,700 AND GBP 11,400 - 13,500 respectively.

New Towers are springing up all the time. There are loads of them in the area. Both on this side of SZR and opposite. So u really need to get down here and have a good look at wots on offer b4 u commit. Wudnt suggest doing rental agreements remotely. "Try b4 u buy" I have been told.

Hope that helps.

Where abouts in UK you moving from? We used Brittania and they quoted 4-6 weeks, but we got caught up in IMF conference where ships were being delayed etc. so took in total about 8 weeks with custom clearance, but think that was a one off! Usually the date they quote is fairly dependable FD
