Religious group
hi all
First, I'm new to the site - so please be nice to me
I need your help. A friend of mine is thinking of moving to Dubai as her hubbie has been offered a job. The problem is that they are Jewish, and they are not too sure how they would settle down here because of their religion. I have been living in Dubai for 9 months now, but have never heard of any Jewish organisations etc so haven't been able to give her any advice. Does anyone have any info or contact nos for Jewish groups/individuals? PM me if you prefer.
Cheers, and look forward to chatting soon!
WA, xx

You are joking aren't you?
Also - why do people always have to pair off into ethnic/religious groups when they come here. It's ridiculous.

No I'm not joking! I don't give a monkeys about anyone's religion, but I guess if Jewish people still want to practice their faith when they are abroad, then it's useful if they can contact others who are in the same situation. It's not a case of who they are going to be friends with, but still an important part of their life. Don't think there would be an issue for any other faith here in ME.
Anway, back to the question, if anyone can help....

Re: Religious group
Firstly - have they an Israeli stamp in their passport? If so then given the current situation I'd be amazed if they were even let in.
Secondly, you do realise that to Arabs, Israel (and therefore jews) don't even exist.
The animosity towards them will be horrendous, as W10 says please tell me you're joking.
I'm sure you were.
From here
It's not advisable.

[comment buried, show commenthide comment] + 1 digg Now only if the government of Dubai wasn't radically anti-Jewish (like most other Arab countries), I'd be a little excited about it. Alas, I'm a Jew, and if I attempted to set my foot in their country and actually made people aware of my religion and ethnicity, I'd likely be either asked to leave their country, receive massive doses of government-supported discrimination, or possibly even murdered.

MJH, thanks for the reply.
I - and they - are fully aware of the sensitivities, but the fact is that there are Jewish people living here...but guess this isn't going to be the way to contact them.

Re: Religious group
I'm not certain it's even legal to practice Judaism in UAE.
They may care to investigate that before thinking further.
I'd hate to get on the wrong side of the law here.
I wish I could tell you where to look, but I can't. Good luck!

Re: Religious group
Wouldnt it be nice if most religions "were just practiced in their own homes?" and not shoved down everyone else's throats?

And it's not legal to do lots of things here, but that doesn't stop people doing them, does it? Drinking and driving, for example, which seems to be a particular speciality of Western expats - as if the roads weren't dangerous enough. But that's another thread...

Ahh... the joy of Atheism, you'll never get caught!!
Regarding the issue of drinking and driving... we were taking the elevator up from the car park yesterday and there was an Aussie who was just stinking of booze who had just parked his car. For shame!!!

Can Jewish people not exist without other Jewish people to socialise with?

Thanks W10. Took your advice and placed an ad in Spinneys for them - problem is, it must have been too cryptic as I've had no Jewish people call me, just lots of men wanting to be my special friend.
