I am in an engineering consultancy firm and most work has dropped off and we expect a big hammer to drop after Eid or New Year..

Let me see rent paid a year up, a 3 bed apartment fully furnished with all appliances out of my pocket and a car..guess I wont be able to sell much...
no home to go back to anymore.. thought this was going to be a 10 yr plan.

We are all shitting ourselves..

I was due to fly out 2 weeks ago and so was all ready to go i.e. finished work at UK practice, rented out apartment in Manchester etc. Now i'm facing the realisation that i may not even make it out to UAE and will be left without job or home. Nuts!!
The practice out there are telling me that i'm still good to go but it appears they are still stalling!! eeeeek!!

sorry to hear it mate. we have had to put off a lot of people coming from overseas for the last couple of months and most were in the same boat having left jobs and rented out house. you never know depending on your firm you may well be okay but chances are pretty slim

Sorry Nick Design to hear this. There was a feature in one of the New York newspapers a few weeks ago where exactly the same thing happened to a guy there as you but eventually they fessed up his job was gone. I fear neither of you are alone.

At this stage, see if you can retrieve your old job. Apparently our firm is being deluged with CVs from employees of other firms from which they have been terminated. As I said..we dont know how long we will have jobs for either.

I know people who are also losing jobs in Qatar..so maybe Bahrain? Anyone have news on Bahrain?

Hi Saleca,

I might be known on this board for my typical Dutch views, but I to have good friends living and working in Dubai. Okay, not English, Dutch and French but they're in the same ship you are. One years rent prepaid, three and four bedroom villa's with everything paid out of their own pockets. Just keep on putting one foot in front of the other. Nobody likes to dump & leave behind what they worked so hard for to get. Maybe lady faith will land you an other job somewhere in Dubai. Maybe not your line of work, but...

Hi Dutchie.. reread my mail..didnt mean to sound so self focused..meant to add a bottom line..that there is thousands of others in the same boat. Unfortunately, not many of us have jobs to return to in our own countries either,as the world goes into meltdown. Others ,like me, may prefer to return to nothing and find other avenues of work in our home countries. To family and friends, easier rental situations etc. I am feeling that this will be my inclination.

Hi Seleca,

Understood, and I've helped a few out with landing them a job in Europe, an no, not all Dutch nationals. Regardless of nationality, having a wife and children? I can only imagine what's going through a parents mind at the moment. I can almost thank the good lord my daughter has finished her school years and started her own family now.

And with a world getting smaller by the day? The fact the big three car makers in the USA where not financially helped is going to cost an estimated 5.500 Dutch nationals their jobs in 2008 / 2009. The UAE might be in a bad position, Europe at the moment isn't much better either.

Lets see what happens with the American car makers in the next few days..there is a lot of bargaining with Unions etc to be done but this crisis cannot ensue as the ramifications down the supply chain are catastrophic...time will tell.

gotta go now ..cheers
