Hi

I'll shortly be going over to Das Island to work (currently in blighty) and my company has advised me that the following will be confiscated at AUH airport if found in my baggage:

1) Camera
2) Any mobile phone with camera
3) Laptop with webcam
4) Any device capable of recording images

Obviously i understand that ordinary cameras are a definite no-no, but how strictly are the other rules enforced? Problem is that i did plan to take my Sony notebook (with webcam) and iphone but if i know for sure that they won't allow these in, then at least i can leave these behind in UK and purchase cheaper alternatives. Having previously worked in oilfields in Buhasa, Habshan, Shah etc i know that ADNOC/ADCO can be very strict sometimes so don't want to risk it

load of balls, you won't have them confiscated at AUH Airport (unless you've got porn on them - even then unlikely). It's only when you are visiting CNIA/Government + some private facilities you have to normally leave your phone in your car, or at their reception.

Have you actually been to Das Island in recent times? Like yourself my initial reaction was "what a load of cobblers!" but i want to know for sure by people who've been there recently.

ah, OK, you mean when checking in to AUH for the chopper flight out? Sorry, I thought you meant on arrival in AUH.

If you even TRY to take a mobile with camera, laptop with camera or similar onto Das Island they will confiscate them and the CNIA could be asking questions as to why you are even trying to take them when you have been advised they are not allowed. Hubby works there now, flies out of AUH every 6 weeks, very stringent on checking from this.

He takes my old camera-free laptop and for 3 years used my old nokia 6210 phone! It seems to be well nigh impossible to get a laptop or a decent phone without them these days!

Thanks Bluelionesse, really appreciate your advice! What about things like USB pen drives, external drives? Are these also a definite no-no? This is the advice i've been given by my company:

I believe the flight from AUH-DAS is a small Dash 8 propeller plane...correct me if i'm wrong!

Yes it's a Dash 8, 50 seater. 40 minute flight, start off on time and get later than scheduled as the day progresses.

USB pen drives and external drives can be taken on the island, but security may scan them. Make sure you have a good virus checker on your computer because last time they scanned one of my hubby's it came back with a virus on it.

I think I would follow your company guidance to the letter. I only need to get on Ruwais and Habshan and have to leave my BB at the office in AD as it will get me in the shit because of the camera however I have been on both with laptop with camera with no problems at all. It sounds much stricter on Das
