Default Question about kids education in the UAE

Hi,

Contemplating on moving the wife and kids over later in the year, and I', curious to know what method of teaching the british schools use in the UAE?

Do they go by the new "phonics" method, or the traditional A B C method?

My girls have been bought up on the phonics, and although good to some extent I would rather be prepared if we have have to start back at square one.

Many thanks

No idea what you are talking about? We use the traditional "kick 'em up the backside" technique over here.

Lionheart is lying...education for expat children here is mostly about taking them to malls and spending hundreds of pounds on them so when they are 12 they will know what to spend the hundred pounds a week pocket money you give them

very helpful to the original question, the british curriculum is the same here as it is in england. if you look up bsak in ab dabs they have on their website loads of information that should help.

Thanks busybee

Just for info, most of the schools in the UK has recently adopted to teach the phonics method of learning your A B C as opposed to the old traditional method that you and I were taught.

The advantage is that the child learns to read by using the sounds of each letter. At first I was a little aprehensive, but my 4 year old can read story books pretty well, although a little slow.

If she isn't using the phonics method yet, it might be worth introducing her to it. I'm sure there are videos on YouTube to help out.

I wasn't too sure about it when she started, considering she knew her ABC when i started her at nursery, but then her teacher told us to stop teaching that method and start with phonics.

Kids pick up the sounds pretty easily as each sound has an action to help them remind them. For example, for the letter A the sound is A (as in ant), and the action is that the child repeats the sound pretending an ant is crawling up their arm. It might sound a little strange but for the kids, its a easy way for them to remember.

My child is 5 and in Foundation 2, they were taught phonics (no spellings) and simple whole word recognition. That said she loves reading and manages to read story books by herself. Her writing is atrocious (the mirror image stage)- not that it bothers me!
