Good news! Friends of ours are there - she likes it, he's bored . . . We were there 15 years ago - loved it - mind it has changed . . . .. If you go can give you friend's details also. Let me know.

Re: Qatar - you know anyone there
We were there for a few years in the early 90's and it was boring but I believe that it has now changed. The good thing about it was that there was a community spirit amongst expats and I remember lots of dinners at home as alcohol was not served in hotels (some time you could get away with it by asking for a special pot of tea and it came served in a tea pot!) They are not so strict now so you should be OK for that. The thing I hated was the fact that you had to have an exit visa everytime you left the country and I think that still applies. My husband has been tempted by several jobs there recently - they have a couple of excellent schools too and Qatar Air is a decent airline. It's definately worth considering.

thanks for the info - the exit visa is still there but depending on your position within a company i believe you can get a multiple entry and exit visa...
the above is an issue for me at the moment

When we were there DH had to actually take me to the airport if I flew alone . . . . Was never an issue really tho. There are bars in all the hotels, including an Irish one in the Doha Sheraton . . . . Golf clubs, shopping malls, really it's a bit like a smaller, less glitzy version of Dubai, Has a lovely corniche to walk along.
There are far worse places you could end up in . . . .
