Public transport in Dubai
I cannot drive for health reasons. Can anyone comment on the public transport in Dubai, or how expensive/widely available Taxis are?
I'd like to teach in Dubai in a few years time, but am concerned that the inability to drive may mean living in Dubai is not an option for me?
Thanks!

Public transport is fine so long as you live in certain areas. Even the buses are becoming more of an option.

They will 'toot' you for business... 24-7
In the main, notoriously bad drivers. Still that's half the fun. Some are lovely.
Also, depends where you are planning on being, er here...
Taxi Frequency Update: Much lower during ramadingdangdong.
As for your forecast of a few years time. Are you part of a (and or) the second coming?
If so, proceed as normal.

Re: Public transport in Dubai
I think the critical point here is that there is serviceable public transport in Dubai, unlike many cities in the region and you can function quite reasonably without a car. There is a fairly extensive bus network though frequencies can vary depending on the route. There is a metro which is only really useful if your home and destination are both within easy walking distance of a station. And, as others have mentioned, there are taxis which are usually fairly easy to find and fairly reasonably priced (though less so than they used to be). Chances are that by the time you come to Dubai the situation will only have improved further as the bus network is continually enhanced (well that's how they describe what they're doing anyway)and there is an additional light rail system due to come online sometime in the next few years (nobody would bet exactly when though).
Needing to use public transport will restrict your options on where to live but there are still plenty of places you could consider at varying price ranges and with an array of types of neighbourhoods. Proximity to a metro station might cost a bit extra.
