Re: PS3 Iplayer

I used that myself on here a few months back. So yeah good work.

Also i have googled it and i can't find much in the way of useful info on the subject. Also I'm not asking for a victoria spongue recipe, so with it probably being a relatively common expat problem the chances of someone on an expat site being able to help are probably quite high. Hence my need to now spell out my reasons to the clique ***** on here for asking a question.

Also I thought someone on here might be able to give me some advice re dns addresses that might work.

FFS lol

Well, what do you classify as "useful info"? The very first link in that LMGTFY search (after the ad-sponsored one at the top) is to this page, which provides a hand-holding 19-step process for connecting your PS3 to your computer's VPN, and an embedded YouTube video at the bottom which shows someone actually doing it. Doesn't really get much clearer, I wouldn't have thought.

so with it probably being a relatively common expat problem
It seems to be a relatively common PS3 problem, not just an expat one - which is why there are so many sites explaining how to do it...

If it's too complicated, though, just buy a VPN router. Any device connected to it will automatically be going through a VPN without need to configure anything on any of the devices themselves. You'll need to use your computer to tell the router which gateway to use so that you have an IP address from the right country, but that's all.

Re: PS3 Iplayer

Yes it does and yes you are correct - and I'm fairly sure i can connect my ps3 to my vpn although my provider doesnt specify ps3 stuff on their site which concerned me a bit.

I suppose I was hoping someone would say don't bother with vpn here's the dns address you need. I should have explicitly asked that question.

Anyway even though I now look like a numpty does not excuse you being unecessarily fecetious :p

How would changing the DNS settings help you overcome iPlayer's geographical restrictions?

It's what I use. I don't use a vpn.

The otherway to do this would be to put the VPN/DNS settings on the router itself, that way everything connecting to it is sorted.

it is worth looking up the DNS thing though. I assume the PS3 allows you to adjust the DNS server it uses.

So by changing the DNS settings instead of using a VPN, does that mean you can use things like the iPlayer, without being restricted by however much the VPN's bandwidth is being strangled??

yes and no.

it will get you iplayer / hulu (without switching countries) but will not overcome content filtering - so any smut you want would need a vpn.

Thanks, I'll keep paying for the VPN for the latter then, but look into the DNS settings for the former. I currently get quite a lot of buffering on the iPlayer through the VPN, so if I can somehow watch it without the VPN it would be much better.

Any advice on 'changing DNS servers for dummies' would be appreciated...

Re: PS3 Iplayer

It'll be in your router settings. TBH I had no idea that the DNS settings made any difference insofar as iPlayer is concerned. Your IP address is still non-British, so I wonder why it works?

So..... what DNS settings do you use Millhouse? PS3 allows you to manually set the DNS settings
