Problem re-registering our car ...
... can anyone help?
Tried to get car re-registered today but it was denied because, apparently, we own two cars one of which has outstanding fines. We have ONLY EVER owned one car in Dubai in the six years we've been here and now, according to our 'drivers record' at the RTA we now own two cars. Does anybody have any idea how we can prove that we only own one car which is the car without any unpaid fines?
Going to the Bur Dubai Traffic place to try and get this sorted out again later this morning - perhaps it will help going in person? Our insurance provides us with a service whereby somebody comes and collects our car, takes it to the testing/registration station and it's normally all done and dusted. This has worked ever since we arrived. Not this time so any help would be really gratefully received.
The fine due is 'only' 400dhs so it's tempting to just pay it to get the car re-registered as we really need to go to Oman before 21 July but I feel that, if we pay the fine, it will be really difficult to prove that we don't and have never owned that particular car. BTW, we have only ever owned one car since we've been in Dubai and that's the one we're trying to re-register.

Pay the fine for the other car. Note when it is time for the re-registration of other car. Hang around registration station until you see other car. Claim what's rightfully yours. Hey presto. New car for 400 Dh. Sell car and keep the proceeds.

COULD IT BE THAT THERE IS ANOTHER EXPAT WITH THE SAME NAME AS YOU? OOps........
Maybe there is, and they are not looking very close at things like different Box No? Just a thought. There used to be a guy with the same name as me and it threw up a few things over the years.
I have always found them pretty helpful so hopefully attending in person has solved the problem!

Re: Problem re-registering our car ...
Thanks for your post Jim Smith. We phoned this morning and the guy on the phone said not to go in person until he had had a copy of the paper fine, issued in Deira, sent through to Al Barsha. Having checked the registration number of the car (which we don't own) on the RTA web site the vehicle has nearly 2000dhs of outstanding fines (many on SALIK) and also 6 black points on the licence. The only traffic offence for this registration which isn't registered on that plate is the one which has appeared on our registration,TRA traffic file, driving licence. This definitely isn't us so we'll be down to Al Barsha Wednesday morning by which time somebody (hopefully) will be able to see the Deira issued fine on line and realise that somebody's made a mistake.
If necessary we'll pay the fine because we need to drive to RAK on Sunday for visa purposes.
Saudiflares ... great suggestion but don't think we want to take ownership of a vehicle with so many fines/black points - it's probably a cr@p vehicle anyway having looked at the fine history on the RTA website.
