Yes but its only a few weeks ago it was all doom and gloom for the UK and the pound was stuffed, now its up over 10% against the Euro and Dollar since March. Whats to stop it getting stronger??

I'd have been sending money home a few months back...

It now costs you 6AED to buy 1 GBP... back at the end of January it would have only cost just over 5 AED to buy 1 GBP

OK I think I'm really being thick here...I don't get all of this converting really and I'm not sure what side I'm supposed to be on...loving the fact that GBP is getting stronger or willing it to get weaker??!!

I get paid in AED and have been (rather depressingly) converting my monthly salary into GBP on xe.com only to watch it drop every day or so even further..am I right in saying that I'm completely screwed? I mean, it's all relative here in Dubai but sending money home is going to be a big no no for me until the pound weakens again...right??!!

Correct. Well, you're not completely screwed - you earn AED in a country where you spend AED so that doesn't make any difference. But if you want to save money it does make a difference: at the moment if you send 6,000AED home it will be 1,000GBP in your UK bank account. A couple of months ago you would only have had to send about 5,000AED home to get the same 1,000GBP saved. So yes, if you want to save money in the UK you want the pound to weaken. Hope that makes sense.

As the AED is pegged to the USD, why weren't you sending dosh back to the UK when it was a much better rate? Surely AED6 to the GBP is 20% worse than AED5 for anyone converting US dollars to pound sterling.

Why save money in the UK? Interest rates here are generally higher than UK, esp with no tax on the savings.

You should have a chat with a financial advisor here to get some info on what all is available to you
