Just need your advice. The background;

I am working in consulting (not in the UK, but in the EU). i have received an offer from Oman: 2000 OMR per month + standard relocation package (healthcare insurance for family, living in hotel, air tickets, 1200 OMR Relocation bonus etc). Also I was promised a quick promotion, but it is just a promise (maybe happens, maybe doesn't).

The salary and the grade are higher than I currently have.

However, my concerns are:

1) is it a good offer? Is it possible to find a good flat in a comfortable area, to eat and drink properly, save something i.e. live comfortable as if you are in the EU (with an adjustment that it is a Muslim country) and save some money. provided that I have a family (my wife and a newborn child).


2) is is it practically possible to find a job for my wife (she also work in consulting but now she is on maternity leave)?

3) And how big is differences in prices and salaries between Oman and the UAE?

Well, the problem is that you could not have your current salary in Oman, right? :-)

You say ‘living in hotel ‘. Do you actually mean that you, your wife and baby would be living permanently in an hotel at your prospective employers expense or is the employer going to pay rent? If so, how much is the housing allowance? And, assuming that you might stay a while, is there any funding for education which isn’t cheap? How would you plan to travel to and from work - buy or lease a car? How would your wife get around town to shop etc? Where would the job be and, if you’re not going to be living in an hotel full time, where would you prefer to live? Would you be planning on not only saving but doing something about a pension? You would also have to check exactly what is and what is not covered by health insurance: for example, an appointment with a family doctor will cost around OMR20, and not all companies offer dental insurance in the health package.

Going out to eat and drink is expensive - you’re looking at around €20 for a pint/½ litre of beer and a glass of wine.

Personally, I don’t think OMR2,000 is enough to be able to live comfortably (with a young family which may expand), be able to put sufficient funds aside to allow for a speedy exit if required, and be able to save anything approaching a reasonable amount.

"Living in a hotel" means a standard benefit of a relocation package - you live in a hotel first two weeks/months/ etc then move to an apartment

As for the salary and allowances - it is already included. So the total remuneration is OMR 2k. There is annual bonus (2-3 salaries) but as bonus, it is paid discretionary

Actually, I got several opinions and, more or less, they are consistent: Oman is a nice country, differs from the UAE, salaries are lower, but OMR 2000 is not enough.
