Hi
My husband and I are looking to move to Dubai and for the past month we have sent our CV's to over a dozen agencies with zero responses. We have tried the speculative approach and also applied for specific roles but no joy - are we missing a trick? We could really do with some help

Hi Monsoon, so nice to meet you Dubai is an employer's haven, there are so many employees applying for work so they can afford to be picky. I don't quite know much about the agencies, but it is best if you can come out here over Easter perhaps and actually visit potential employers yourself, it gets you much further

As per my personal experience? 8 out of the 10 faxes are never read. 9 out of the 10 emails are never opened. And snail mail (normal postal services) isn't much better either. My advise? Turn the brain off, and just keep on trying.

I moved out here some 9 months ago and about 3 months later my partner made the decision to follow. she had planned to move out in January (last month) and hopefully have lined up a job.

She then spent the past 6 months internetting, emailing, posting etc etc to agencies and she pretty much always got the same reply "can you come in for an interview". Thats only if they relpied (which usually they didn't)

Pretty much no one would pay any interest unless she was here and ready to work.

For the record she has been here 2 weeks....had lots of interviews and today she started a full time job. YAY!!!!

So - my advice....assuming you really want to be here is take the plunge and hope for the best when you get here.

I think that's good advice. I'm not in the same boat work-wise but when we were looking for a school place for our son, no-one wanted to know. He was on the waiting list of 3 schools for 5 months before we arrived and even managed to be further back in the list of one by the time we got here! Once we were here it took 2 days to secure a place at 1 of the schools, so I really think that they don't put too much effort in until you're here in person.

To be fair, I think schools, employment agencies etc are absolutely inundated with speculative enquiries from people who never actually make it here, so it's understandable, if annoying.

From personal experience you must, must, be here in person to get anywhere with agencies. Even then you have to keep in regular contact with them or you will be forgotten about. There are lots of rubbish jobs in Dubai, a few good ones (very few really good ones) but there are also lots of people looking. Sorry I can't be a bit more positive but from the agencies point of view they won't want to put you forward for a job if they haven't met you!

hi, sorry to burst some bubbles but i now work in the field and can personally say that i recieve over two hundred c.v's a day!!!!

if you are not in town or have about 10 yrs specialist experience i just dont have time to get in touch and neither does anyone else.

there are so many people coming to dubai to look for work that if youre not here companies are not going to either wait for you or pay for you to come out and see them, the local market is literally flooded with exceptionally well qualified people who are available immediately.

Thats not to say you cant get a job before you come here but it is getting rarer by the day and is likely only to happen if you have a skill or skills which are not available locally. i will put a post in the faq's shortly addressing this topic so keep your eyes open.

dozen odd job apps...need to send out hundreds...had a mate that sent out 200 job apps around the world, got 10 responses' and only 2 interviews, and one job offer, and he sent out nice cv's in a snassy case etc, all very designer sheek...cost hundreds...also, we were at a very good design uni....so I'd send out shit loads more job apps and not expect any responses unless you can follow them up with a letter saying we will be in dxb between these days to see you.
Like that all over the place, I've been applying for work in the states for a year, finally, i just got a job test, not even a job interview, just a test for one.
