New Boy on the Way
I've just accepted a job in Riyadh and have been looking about for accomodation. There are some nice apartments off-compound in the city. Is there anything wrong with not living in a compound (especially as it seems to be a lot more expensive)?
I'll be on my own for at least the first 6 months but the aim would be to bring my family out in the long run.
All constructive advice welcomed
Thanks

There are past threads covering the pro/cons, plenty of them if you care to look out for them.
They all pretty much paint the same picture though, that the above answer is the summary.

i don't see living in compound is great idea in Riyadh you can find villa with cheap price and it's will be like the apartment that you will rent in the compound

I suspect it's more about the compound being more like a Western community, plus being safer and more secure, as opposed to the actual villa/apartment itself.

Only live off-compound if you are Arabic speaking, Muslim and/or don't drink. just being prudent. You will be surprised how many Saudis hate westerners.

Its not so much about danger, its more about having an outlet after work to socialise or operate in a more western manner.
I have friends in compounds and in private accommodation in Riyadh, but they all come to the compounds to socialise or escape the strictness.
but if you can be a hermit of sorts, you will get a huge private villa. Also never mind the idea of needing to speak Arabic, you'll manage fine.
Not in Riyadh myself any more.
