Just to answer my own question up-thread, in case it's useful for someone: the old passport was received in Liverpool on a Tuesday and the new passport (plus old one with the visa in it) was back in my hands on the following Sunday, so amazingly quick compared to days of yore.

https://www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport

You need your long birth certificate with your parents details on it and the birth certificate you got from the hospital here for your daughter.

Just fill in the application online and send the original required documents. (Your birth certificate, her UAE birth certificate, application form, certified photos and I threw in a passport copy for good measure)

You pay online.

They send the passport and the original documents back to you in 2 separate shipments by DHL.

Good luck with the passport photos. Our first 20 attempts were hilarious!

You don’t need to register the birth abroad to do the passport application. Here are the guidelines https://www.gov.uk/register-a-birth, I haven’t done it and am not sure what the benefit is anyway.
Hello -

did you have to send any grandparents stuff?

Grandparents’ documents

Send all of the following for both maternal grandparents:
  • full birth or adoption certificate
  • grandfather’s marriage certificate to your grandmother (if this applies)
And all of the following for both paternal grandparents:
  • full birth or adoption certificate
  • grandfather’s marriage certificate to your grandmother (if this applies

I'm have a WTF moment. The grandparents are all dead, or close.

Don’t worry about grandparents then, just your full birth certificate will be enough.

Thank you - that's reassuring. I was going to take my chance in the casino anyway but you've put my mind at rest.

When my son was born in Dubai getting the passport was easy
HOWEVER, I needed to go to Immigration to get an entry stamp even though he was born here.
They wouldn't let us fly out without it. I'm not sure if its still the case but its worth checking

Well, more fool your son for not getting one when he slid out.

Wouldn’t that have been an “exit” stamp?

Providing the photos and countersignature is present and correct then that should be fine.

What about copies of both sides of your emirates ID?
Full hand print?
Notification of preference between green or blue swimming shorts?
Average number of hours spent flying per week?
Total number of vitamins taken in 2016, 2017 and 2018?

You're missing way too much.

No photos submitted - all uploaded now and e-signed off. I got a lawyer friend is a UK citizen and resident to do it - he's even met my daughter. Bulletproof on that.
