Yes, you understand more than you think... an international driver's license/permit is worthless most other places and in the US even discouraged by the government BUT in order to rent a car in Abu Dhabi you must have one. So get your passport photos and find an open AA -there is a possibility that you could get it at the Abu Dhabi airport -saw a sign there a few days ago but who knows? Had my wife and associates go by and get theirs and mine in US -took 5 minutes and cost $10.

But what about Doha, Qatar? We wont be staying in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, but Doha.
Suppose we shall just take our Uk licence, NZ licence, bilions of passport size pixs and hope for the best...or taxi!

Here is a link to some information on the International Driving Licence. Please note that it expressly says that an international licence must be issued in the country in which your underlying domestic licence was issued:

If you cannot get an international licence, I would have my licence officially translated into Arabic by a translator with a rubber stamp collection and pray will hard. In this country never underestimate the value of a sheaf full of useless documents written with the appropriate level of legalese and full of stamps and seals.

Not sure about Doha but rubber stamps are very big here in UAE You need a stamp for everything if you are in business-recommend that you have several made at a place like Office Max or the like that have very official looking gobblygook about you-just an idea... In Doha taxis are cheap and besides can you drive anywhere outside of the main roads? Everyone I talked to when I was there said the roads were terrible everywhere else.

After life in NZ, I can handle ANYTHING, even the roads! lol
