I've got a friend coming over and want to show him some "proper" dunes rolling off into the distance (i.e. without pylons or buildings in the background). Where's the nearest place to Abu Dhabi that is accessible without deflating tyres? The closest place I've been to is Al Khatim but is there something nearer than that?

Al Khatim, or Al Sweihan. Personally, I find Al Sweihan more scenic.

just drive down sweihan road and you will find some dunes.

Nothing compares to the dunes in the Empty Quarter. Why not make it a day and stop via the Liwa Hotel for a bite to eat? Fantastic views from by the swimming pool and no deflating of tyres needed.

The Empty Quarter will give your mate a proper desert back drop for all the photos. Head out of Abu Dhabi on the Mussafa road then hang a right heading towards Ruwais. After around 10 clix hang a right again following the road signs to Hameem and the brown signs for Qasr Al sarab. You will soon find yourself in the open desert (albeit on a decent tarmac road) camels and small antelope are also out and about if you are lucky

As it turns out, we went to Al Khatim - it's just an hour away and you can get full dune exposure without having to faff all the way down towards Liwa / Qasr al Sarab.
