Muslims who break the rules!
how do you all feel about locals who are muslim whilst in local dress and as soon as they get changed into western clothes adopt western attitudes?? Over the years I have increasingly seen local men drinking alcohol, sometimes even in local dress, yet if an expat christian comes here and does something wrong they can be kicked out!!

A muslim when is left to his own devices, will consume much more alcohol than a westerner...But you willl find exceptions of course...
The Arabs have a saying: (Koul shi mamnou3,marghoub)Every thing that is forbidden,it is desired (or something in the same meaning)...

I think you raise a good point.
Personally, I don't have a problem with anybody doing whatever they like as long as they aren't preachy or hypocritical about it.
For example, I recently saw a Saudi couple at a swanky brunch in Dubai. They were both dressed in national dress and she was wearing a veil (only eyes showing). He was quaffing Heinekens like his life depended on it while his wife had to perform such contortions to get the food down her alimentary canal - just the merest lifting of veil to get food to gob - making sure that none of us got the teensiest glimpse of her chin. It really irritated me to see that.
Guys in pubs in national dress does not bother me at all (it's a very common sight in Muscat, for example). I do find it strange that most men in national dress will be turned away from places in Dubai - ie., Apres at MOE will not allow men in national dress. That seems strange to me.

not really as drinking alcohol is illegal for muslims, even in the airport there are signs saying alcohol not avail to muslims. Apres could lose their licence and as they are part of the Kempinski it could cause problems for the hotel. I can see their point. If the men were western dressed then they could do the 'I didn't know they were muslim' thing.
I saw a lady in St Moritz the other day completely covered doing same thing, it was awful.
It annoys me that they can put on western dress and become alco's!!! LOL

Re: Muslims who break the rules!
Islam is a religion like any other and some people are more strict about it than others ... I mean alot of people who would say they are christian would still have sex before marriage ect.... I know tons of jew and muslims that eat pork........... most religoins have so many rules you would probably be hard pushed to follow them all...............
The veil thing is a regional custom not an islamic thing.........

Re: Muslims who break the rules!
the national dress isnt a religious thing but a cultural one. when i see 'national' people in doobai, i dont see muslim folk but see proud humans (all of whom are entitled to their own beliefs and rules).
times are changing and much of world wants to be seen as 'western' and i think with each new generation that is becoming easier and easier. imo there isnt anything wrong with this and as some have already pointed out, no one on earth is a saint
with this in mind, i feel it is completely unfair to assume everyone wearing the national dress is muslim

Who cares?
Id rather see a saudi/emirati/arab drinking a beer and doing what he wants.
At least you know he is not an extremist.!
Its all about freedom of choice.

Re: Muslims who break the rules!
Alcohol has always been present in Muslim countries - and Sufi poets like Omar Khayyam and Rumi celebrated a kind of "Dionysian abandon" as a means of spiritual enlightenment!!
Not that I'm saying that your local downing heinies is somehow being reverent, but he is at least excercising a freedom of choice which he's perfectly entitled to...
Meanwhile in the UK our liberal papers question the whole "binge drinking" culture, and its relation to unwanted pregnancies, street violence etc...
Who is to say who is right & who is wrong here? Emirati people have had to cope with enormous cultural change over the space of a couple of generations - it's a society in transition, and the value system is inevitably shifiting.
