Moving to Dubai - Tax return Question
Hi
Not to sure where to post this but here goes... Im moving to Dubai permanently from UK on Saturday, Ive been self employed up until now, my question is do I need to fill out a tax return now or wait until April 6th 2015 when I would normally send it in? Also are there any other forms i need to fill in? Thanks guys |
Re: Moving to Dubai - Tax return Question
My experience moving to KSA, I filled in the form to notify them I was leaving the country (I don't remember the reference for the form but easily found on HMRC). Six months later they contacted me by post concerning issues with my old P11D, I wasn't self employed. Personally I'd just notify them and go.

Searching on here will bring up LOTS of info and details on the R85.
All I need to know is wether to do a tax return now or in April 2015 and do I even need to fill in the P85? seems to be for permanent employees only. HMRC website isn't clear at all. |
Re: Moving to Dubai - Tax return Question
Here you go.
took 20 seconds on the HMRC website.;) HM Revenue & Customs: Filing a tax return if you live or work outside the UK Read it carefully and you'll see it does cover self employed. |
Re: Moving to Dubai - Tax return Question
Hi zak87,
You do not need to submit form P85 if you are required to complete a self assessment tax return for the tax year that you leave. As the above does apply to your personal circumstances you only need to submit your 2014/15 tax return when issued by either the paper filing deadline of 31 October 2015 or the online filing deadline of 31 January 2016. If your personal circumstances meet the criteria for split year treatment under the new statutory residence test and you are classed as UK non-resident for the current tax year please be aware that as a UK non-resident you will no longer be able to submit your tax return using HMRC's online filing system. HMRC's online filing system is designed for UK residents only and does not support the necessary schedules that must be submitted with your tax return to protect your non-residence status and exposure to UK taxation. |
Re: Moving to Dubai - Tax return Question
Don't understand the bit about HMRC on-line filing service being for UK residents only. Have been successfully filing on-line for at least five years without any problem and have been non-resident for tax purposes since 2006 (used to take the easy way and get an accountant to file for me when my return was more complicated). Maybe it's because I now only have two pensions to declare and both are taxed at source in the UK?

Re: Moving to Dubai - Tax return Question
Hello hnd,
Tax returns accepted by HMRC's online filing system does not mean that the tax returns are correct. HMRC's online filing system is designed for UK residents only. The residence schedule which must be submitted with your tax return when UK non-resident to protect your non-resident status would have been omitted as this schedule is not available on HMRC's online filing system. This is a very common error made by many people and unfortunately means that your tax return submissions would be missing the residence schedules and therefore would be incorrect. |
