There's the rugby club and garveys - kinda pubby.

All the rest of bars/clubs are in the hotels. There are a handful yes. Depends on your tastes and budgets I spose.

Doha is a sh*thole, pardon my french  I have to go there on a monthly basis to visit one of our offices and it truly is the pits......wild horses wouldn't be able to drag me there to live and work......unless ofcourse my salary got quadrupled

Because there are not the easily accessible 'entertainments' that somewhere like Dubai has to offer, just visiting Doha does not give a good impression.

If you live there, you make friends and socialise at each others houses and join the various social and sporting clubs.

Probably better than it was, but yes, not the place if night clubs and shopping malls are your thing.

Spent two very good years there, 98/99.

Would shopping malls be on his list of entertainment? I have some friends there and they say it's a bit conservative, but the HUGE salaries make up for the restricted social life.

Re: Moving to Doha!

I spend three days a week in Doha and two in Dubai with work and have been coming to Doha pretty much on a weekly basis since June. Whilst the array of entertainment isn't as wide or varied as that in Dubai there is still stuff to do. The hotels on the whole are pretty good and there are a large number due for completion over the coming 12 months.

In terms of bars and restaurants outside of the golf club and the rugby club you are probably best with what the hotels have to offer. The Sheraton has the Irish Harp which seems ok, then you have good places to eat at the Four Seasons and the Ritz Carlton- which is a little out of the way.

I also suspect that within the next decade Doha will develop into a good place to live and hopefully learn from some of the growing pains experienced by Dubai- which are starting to come home to roost.

My feel is that Doha is very much a place for couples and families whereas Dubai is good for singles too.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Chris

If you think the rent is high in Dubai ... wait until you see Doha.

Didnt want to waste another decade of my life waiting to be honest and with regard to learning from experience, chance'll be a fine thing!

Whilst I admit there is certainly more to Doha than meets the eye upon a visit, it is restrictive, ludicrously expensive in many respects and is much 'harder work' than other alternative destinations. if the money's that good though, it'll make up for a whole host of shortcomings.
