Default 'The Message' Playing On MBC2 Monday

I have already written it on my Diary, This monday I am home Watching This movie.

Haven't seen the movie wanted to see it when i was very young, but somehow this movie is Banned here in the UAE.

Finally I have the chance to watch it!!!

Trivia

*In accordance with Muslim beliefs, Mohammed could not be depicted on screen nor could his voice be heard. This rule extended to his seven wives, his daughters and his sons-in-law. This left Mohammed's uncle as the central character (played by Anthony Quinn). In the completed film, actors speak directly to the camera and then nod to un-heard dialogue.

*Muhammad Ali expressed interest in playing the role of Bilal, but producer Moustapha Akkad refused, stating that such casting "would smack of commercialism."

*Production stopped when the financeers withdrew their support, leaving cast and crew stranded for two weeks in Morocco (in a hotel with broken air conditioning; they slept under wet towels). Financing was eventually supplied by none other than Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi.

*The University of Al-Azhar in Cairo and the High Islamic Congress of the Shiat in Lebanon were involved in approving the accuracy of the film.
At its initial release, this movie was banned from many Middle-Eastern countries because the religious leaders didn't like the idea of having the Prophet Mohammed's story being made into a motion picture.

*This film was made in both English and Arabic with two different casts. Scenes were shot back to back in both languages.
300 of the extras also helped with the construction of the sets.
It took 4 ½ months to build the ancient city of Mecca

Some Quotes:

Abu Sofyan: Mohammed, there is still doubt in my heart.
Khalid: If we were to cut off your head, it would remove all your doubts.

Bilal: There is no compulsion in religion. A man may take many years, or only need minutes. It is God who decides the time.

Moustapha Akkad also produced all of the Halloween films as well as another Middle East based film The Lion Of The Desert (if I recall correctly). One of a few Arabs to be very successful in Hollywood in to 60s-80s.

He was tragically killed by Muslim extremists in the recent Jordan bombings along with his daughter.

It is a tragic irony that such a successful and passionate Arab muslim who went to such a length to tell the story of the Prophet and educate the world via the powerful and closed word of the film business was murdered by such a group of people.

Casanova - one day soon you may be able to legally buy this on DVD in the UAE.

I'd be very interested to know what you think of the film...

I always wanted to see this movie but just couldn't get it anywhere and no one was willing to take the risk of bringing it in throught the Airport. Too Risky.

I hope MBC2 doesn't pulls the plug on this.

Have you seen the Movie?

I've seen it, didn't like it. The characters are extremely underdeveloped so we don't really care about them, making the lengthy dialogue torturous. The storytelling is jerky and with a lot of gaping holes, omitting key passages and failing to deliver much feeling or drama in the ones it does include. Finally the whole thing with the camera angle showing things from the eyes of the Prophet (bobbing as he rides his camel into Medina) and people nodding and responding to unheard dialogue - it's just awkward and irritating to watch.

The only good thing I can say for it is that they recreated ancient Mecca quite impressively. Other than that I feel it is a disgrace, as the story it tries to tell is so captivating and important but just comes off as a huge bore. I tried to watch this movie twice and switched off after less than half an hour both times.

You're better off reading the book.
