Default Men's dress in Doha

Hello!

Exploring some job opportunities in Doha and trying to acquaint myself with what life is like there. I've read several sites that say men have it "more relaxed" than women but "don't expect to be walking around in shorts or tank tops."

Is that true, even in the ungodly heat of Qatar, (foreign) men don't wear shorts? Or if they do there is staring and potentially problems?

Appreciate any thoughts from others living there.

/Andrew

If you wear tank tops then you probably deserve to be locked up. Bad fashion sense. Please find young Flipper on arrival in Doha to take you (and her) clothes shopping for something a little less 1970's.

I have always worn shorts in Doha for wondering about without any issues. Longs in the bars but thats because I only drank after work and there may be no problem about shorts in the bars during the day

As above, shorts and t-shirt for me at the weekend. I have tattoos too and haven't been locked up (yet)...

Trousers / jeans when going for dinner or to the bar which is usually a pre requisite anyhow. Long sleeved shirt when I don't want to answer the question "what's the meaning behind your tattoos"

Shorts and t shirts are fine here most of the time , like all things here just apply a bit of common sense , there's always the exception of course as this is Qatar.

One word of warning though , there's a new ruling that prohibits you from entering governmental departments with shorts on , be careful on that one , it's hit and miss but places such as immigration / traffic police and the medical commission are cracking down .

Another daft rule for a daft country

Thanks all. I can live without tank tops on the streets... though in Denmark there is a fondness for them

...but my shorts!! Glad to hear I can get away with them!

Much too cold for shorts and tee shirt. In summer: long sleeve shirt, chinos and a pullover. Temperatures in the office, malls etc are typically 15 to 19 degree C. Thankfully most AC thermostats cannot be turned down any lower than that.

^^ this person makes a great point. I've taken to wearing a suit jacket to work (along with other items of course). It get a bit chilly in the office around midday which is probably the time the senior management have exhausted their supply of morning 'hot air'

The usual mob getting hot under the collar and stiff under the trousers over a bra strap or two

It's the norm for the morons here , to be honest there's not much of a problem here for people being inappropiately dressed. You'll get the odd one with beach attire or the odd Lebo with her thong hanging out but that's about it .

It's a shame Qatari's get more incensed over a bare shoulder than they do about the human rights abuses and labour issues in their own back yard , it kinds of eptomises what they're about .
