Al Salaam,

We need to get a new maid for my flat--we're getting ripped-off, methinks: 600dhs/month for one hour a day (and she's doesn't do a very good job, or laundry).

Can someone recommend someone?

Bloody Nora...you should only pay Dhs25 per hour! Try the Classified section on expatwoman.com where 50% of the adverts seem to be from Sri Lankan or Filipina housemaids looking for work.

6 hours a week x 25 dhs x 4 weeks = 600 dhs

I stand corrected, but it seems a lot. Oviously, that suggested hourly rate is for one-off visits only as charged by a domestic servant agency. We used to pay ours Dhs900 for five days x five hours, which worked out at Dhs9 per hour and she was happy.

That's the thing, we're going through an agency (so I know the poor maid is receiving only a fraction of what we're paying). There must be some way to connect directly with a maid?

I don't think the rate we're paying is highway robbery, but still 25dhs is high--and considering she does a poor job, its even worse...

I did post on expatwoman, so I'll see what comes of that, too.

even direct with a maid you will end up paying 20/25dhs. but at least you should get a good one.

Why not just advertise for slave labour? But this thread has been discussed before!

best way is to ask the security guard in your building. he will know of maids working in the building.
