im sorry leila,
actually i dont think it is as long as its with other females..
maybe someone can clear it up.
a lot of advertisments for sharing are found on supermarket notice boards. now i understand that doesnt help you but there is also classifieds in the local papers

It is illegal sometimes. If the landlord has expressly stated that the apartment/villa is shared, and as long as you are sharing with people of the same sex, then it is not illegal. But this is not always the case...
I appreciate that helps not one iota.

you are not allowed to sublet unless with the owners permission, and you are not allowed to share with opposite sexes.

Personally, I think it is a conspiracy to stop more potential expats from moving to Abu Dhabi, but then I've only been here 8 months, what do I know...

no not cheap anymore compared to the 'good olde days', the market has gone a little crazy, but dont believe all the prices you see in the ads, as, in the past as well, they dont always exist, just a ploy to get you interested.

The problem I have with the 'Good Olde Days' of Abu Dhabi, is there were no nice restaurants, no sporting events, no fabulous apartments, no thriving expat community, nothing. Who would have wanted to live here then anyway? Even if it was cheap. I would rather stay in the East End.

Horror stories, Leila. Although some would disagree. The question of whether rent in Abu Dhabi has doubled/tripled/quadrupled over the past year/month/week is a hotly contentious issue on here.

Sam,
We first lived in Ad in 1994 - there weren't any shopping malls except the Hamdan Centre but we had a brand new apartment on the corniche for
Dhs50,000 - there were some great places to eat and some good beach clubs so it wasn't all bad (although the driving was much worse then).

Sam & Nav,
Do you really think there is a move to discourage expats from AD?
How does this sit with an increase in number of weekly flights from UK by national carriers and the number of schools(of all curriculae- not just Brit) being built currently?
