Re: Location, location...
True story: I was at a house party here, there was a bird banging on about her wedding (she had a track record for being a bit big time, for no reason). A group of 5 of us had been subjected to an absolute torrent of boring information about how wonderful it was going to be. Not us asking questions and humble / modest and interesting replies. No. Full blown, full frontal attack of the mind of how wonderful and great it will be.
Scamp, about X pints in (where X = lots) on an empty stomach, just stood there, finally bored of it all and (I promise this is true) I shouted "BORING"...."THIS IS BORING. I'M BOOOOORED OF THIS" before just turning around and walking off. The blokes wet themselves the women shuddered and I went home with a VERY angry mrs.

Re: Location, location...
First off, this isn't a rant and i'm not trying to be harsh but....
Its all very well and good that your role is 'unique, specialist, future proof' and you'll be 'working for the largest company of its type' etc etc but living in the ME isn't for everyone! Some love it, some don't care either way and some hate it! Then you have the fact that the ME may not love you! It's very easy to drop a bollock over here and end up in trouble, and i'm not talking about doing something obviously stupid like getting hammered and streaking down SZR while giving the finger to all the single digits cars! It can be something hugely benign, however, if you rub up the wrong person up the wrong way, it could lead to a very swift exit.
As such, maybe tone down on the 'I'm coming to the ME and cloak and dagger, future proof crap etc etc. This won't go down well with a lot of folk when the region looking a bit wobbly. Also, we've probably seen it all before.
Many of us on here have been here a long time, seen a lot of things, heard a lot of crazy stories and met a lot of 'interesting' people which you wouldn't usually meet back home. This place is transient, its a travel hub with a lot of through flow and I'm constantly amazed by the randomness of the folk I meet just having a beer in the bar next to my office on a Thursday night.

... but it is and you are...
Jeez... you work in an office?, no wonder you're worried about the future, get yourself a proper job where you can't be so easily be replaced.
Then you probably won't feel so insecure and get a hair up your arse about me being upbeat and wanting to protect my anonimity on a public forum.
It's not cloak and dagger mack, it's common sense, but you know what they say about common sense mack..? It aint that common.
I'm glad you've met lots of interesting people that you would never met otherwise... that's a really cool story to take home with you.
I'm not that impressed though

Actually he is trying to inject a sense of realism because you come across as naive and very blasé about coming out here. You seem to fail to miss the point that those of us replying to you actually work and live here and are passing on real world experience. However you appear to know best, so as I said previously go knock yourself out kid.

I think we should just carry on guessing his future proof, non office based job.
Helmet Polisher is a strong guess I think.
Cigarette salesperson - pretty much guaranteed future proof out here.
Diabetes adviser - same as above.
Car crash investigator. NEVER BE OUT OF WORK AGAIN IN DUBAI.

And for clarification....
1, I don't work full time in an office, a good degree of it is spent out and about all over the UAE.
2, I do have a 'proper job' which is also a niche role with several years of work in my pipeline so I'm not concerned about my job security and with nearly a decade working in the ME I'll graciously decline career advice from someone who knows nothing about the region.
3, I just checked and I don't have a hair up my arse, but thanks for asking.
4, I'm not trying to impress you, I don't need to as I don't value your opinion.
Anyway, as you were, you already know it all so just run along and get back to rubbing folk up the wrong way....

Re: Location, location...
I understand perfectly well how living in an insular environment can affect judgement on other peoples real world experience... of which you know little of mine. There's a lot of tough gigs on the planet, Dubai is really not the worst.
Look at the positives Mike, relax and allow yourself the ability to not judge others by your own standards... don't go home under a cloud

I don't think he's been that bad. A few on here have now passed warning of how unstable this place is. He probably won't walk anywhere in summer, but seems to have got that.

I don't do helmet polishing, except my own but I class that as a hobby. but again thanks for the heads up on future career prospects should I need to take on a 2nd job to pay the rent.
