Is living in Dubai worth it?

Is living in Dubai worth it? The hot weather, lack of social life and away frm home. What do you think?
You see I am being sent to Dubai on a visit frm my present employer, we are setting up a small business unit there. I may be posted there for a extended period of time depending on the job at hand. I have also been offered a residential status if I am happy with the living conditions there. So we are in 2 minds as to what to do, we feel the change is good on the other hand we miss all the luxuries back home.

For example, I am in Germany, which equals; high taxes, cold winters and I'm still away from home.
Whereas home (UK) equals high crime, expensive cost of living, crap weather.
Anyway, do you mean about crap social life in Dubai? I get the impression there is lots to do (and the weather doesn't spoil it!!)......as they say; its what you make of it......

i agree with martin. this is a weird and too general question in the sense that from 10 people you'll get 10 different opinions - everyone probably has a different lifestyles, comes from different backgrounds, and has different things they value as being important for their quality of life.
maybe you should post what the things are that are important for you to make a place worth living. you imply that you value a good social life (that's not really very specific) and don't care much for the sun. also you don't want to be away from home? that's no argument, that applies for any place other than your home. don't like the hot sun...no brainer: don't pick dubai. i'm sure you'll get some good replies if you become more specific.

I have been here a year and at last, cos Im gonna be here for some time yet have to get my butt into gear and do something.. Im not a salon, and regular coffee morning person though Im a social person and havent found the right connections yet!
Not being able to drive is a small downfall but may invest on a broom stick much easier to get around and heck it beats the traffic jams!!!

Dubai is a very cosmoplitan place and the social life is extremely good, whatever your tastes. The only real negative would be missing your family and friends, as most who live out there even view the weather as a big plus.
Nothing ventured...nothing gained.

What a brilliant idea! Flying brooms! Think u could customize mine to look more like a hockey stick or better yet, a javelin? I think that sort of version would go down well with the male population! I will take one to go please! hahaha
