Post Is living in Dubai worth it?

Is living in Dubai worth it? The hot weather, lack of social life and away frm home. What do you think?

You see I am being sent to Dubai on a visit frm my present employer, we are setting up a small business unit there. I may be posted there for a extended period of time depending on the job at hand. I have also been offered a residential status if I am happy with the living conditions there. So we are in 2 minds as to what to do, we feel the change is good on the other hand we miss all the luxuries back home.

Bit of a weird question really. Everywhere has its advantages and disadvantages, you just have to weigh them up.

For example, I am in Germany, which equals; high taxes, cold winters and I'm still away from home.

Whereas home (UK) equals high crime, expensive cost of living, crap weather.

Anyway, do you mean about crap social life in Dubai? I get the impression there is lots to do (and the weather doesn't spoil it!!)......as they say; its what you make of it......

i agree with martin. this is a weird and too general question in the sense that from 10 people you'll get 10 different opinions - everyone probably has a different lifestyles, comes from different backgrounds, and has different things they value as being important for their quality of life.

maybe you should post what the things are that are important for you to make a place worth living. you imply that you value a good social life (that's not really very specific) and don't care much for the sun. also you don't want to be away from home? that's no argument, that applies for any place other than your home. don't like the hot sun...no brainer: don't pick dubai. i'm sure you'll get some good replies if you become more specific.

Martin is 110% right..........a place really is wot u make of it. The social life and entertainment opportunities here are endless. Music concerts, piano recitals, plays, art galleries, major internation exhibitions, clubs, fashion shows, sporting events, cooking demonstrations by famous chefs, malls, coffee shops, traffic jams (if u r into that sort of thing! ),internet cafes (like Joe frequents ), bars, hotels.......the list is endless.

Here is a calendar that details the upcoming events in Dubai. You may want to look thru the list b4 casting doubt on Dubais social scene:

Gotta say this wont earn Karma but from my point of view as a mum I prefer the ease of the Uk, from health care to drop in health visiter clinics and depending on your location in the Uk and doesnt have to be expensive ...
I have been here a year and at last, cos Im gonna be here for some time yet have to get my butt into gear and do something.. Im not a salon, and regular coffee morning person though Im a social person and havent found the right connections yet!
Not being able to drive is a small downfall but may invest on a broom stick much easier to get around and heck it beats the traffic jams!!!

Living in a foreign country, even if it's only for a short period of time, is a fantastic experience. I believe everyone should try it. As a Western expat (assuming you are), you should also find that your salary is significantly higher than that of your counterparts back home, not least because it's all tax-free...so you are liable to save far more.

Dubai is a very cosmoplitan place and the social life is extremely good, whatever your tastes. The only real negative would be missing your family and friends, as most who live out there even view the weather as a big plus.

Nothing ventured...nothing gained.

Gonna watch my english here Lol... Would that be the Karma or the ease of being in the uk and everything being readily available! Since my 2 yr old was seriously ill here in January I really wanted to be back "Home" where I trust the med profession and aroundm family and friends.

And thanks for the Karma ...

Yep.....I have to agree there. Not having the freedom to drive around in this car mad society in Dubai can be a real pain. I hate not having my car whenever it goes for servicing. Especially since its new, those 1000 and 5000 kms keep coming up and then i am car-less for a day! its terrible.

What a brilliant idea! Flying brooms! Think u could customize mine to look more like a hockey stick or better yet, a javelin? I think that sort of version would go down well with the male population! I will take one to go please! hahaha
