Re: Living in Al Ain
Funny you should mention being an architect at the Uni. My company are doing the glass and aluminium for that site so it would be handy to meet up for a beer and chat. I got my villa for Dhs 37450 p.a. It's a duplex with a private entrance, two reception + kitchen. Upstairs is another large sitting room with 3 bedrooms off - master bedroom with en-suite. Now for the bad news - it's filthy dirty (dust & grime & crud) with very few amenities & the kitchen cabinets are crap & I have to buy my own air-conditioners. However, my company makes kitchen cabinets so I think I may be getting brand new ones. I have no idea what the average price of a duplex (i.e. semi-detached) villa would be but it seems generally that i've got a bargain. Where from? .... The Department of Social Services & Commercial Buildings Affairs of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. If you'd like the location, I can probably word one for you. And I have their phone no. Hope this helps.

hi Larnie! hope you are well !
good god Change that is for nothing!! we pay 85K here for a 2 bed apartment, it is brand new though. Sounds like it is a bargain even if there is some work to be done, you seem to be working for the right people to get that sorted out
Next time I am up there I will give you a PM and maybe we could all meet up - a BE Al Ain meet!

Hi Larnie, how are you, hope you are okay and still enjoying getting out and about. Blue Cat and I were getting a little worried about you as we hadnt seen you online. Al Ain Man told me he rang you last night and you have arranged to meet up next weekend which is nice. Hope it wont be too long before I can be there too. Take Care xx

Hello again
I have arrived back in Sydney and we are preparing to fly to Abu Dhabi at the end of the week. After a week there we will arrive Al Ain, probably about the 19th - 20th ............Sydney is cold and miserable and I am looking forward to the warmer weather.....
Cheers

Unfortunately I have no idea! We are apparently having a week of orientation and induction in Abu Dhabi...and I am not sure how much of that I am involved in as this is a posting for my husband. It is all pretty much a mystery at this stage and I am planning on 'going with the flow' for the first few weeks!

Thanks for yoru reply. I'd be happy if you'd pass on my details and equally happy to have you send his mob. I can pass on my mob. no. here, but don't know if that's a safe thing to do. Villa getting painted, cans lined up for the fridge and highspeed (2Mb) internet ordered for installation within 10 days .... so if he would like to have some sessions online, he'd be welcome to use the facilities. What a helpful crowd! Its taken me a while but I've just read this whole thread.
My husband and I have been in the UAE for 3 and a half years, mainly in Dubai with 10 months in Abu Dhabi (which we preferred). The apartment we're in only has semi-quiet between 2-6am and it's starting to take it's toll on us. I'm nearly 5 months pregnant with our first child and this city is driving me nuts!
If our landlord lets us, we're going to break our lease and move out - and we think Al Ain would be perfect! You've given us plenty of food for thought so we're going to drive up tomorrow and check the commuting time, get a feel for the place etc. That Oyoun Village looks sensational!
I just wanted to say how helpful all your info has been and that the average person in Al Ain is as friendly as you then we'll be sorted!
Amanda
PS My hubby is an Aberdonian!

Welcome Web-kitten. I think one of the big things about here is that we have a common bond as in we are all away from home so it is nice to see and talk to a friendly face. My husband is working at Al Ain Hospital and I am hoping to join him later this year. We have been expats for a very long time and I would like to start somethin when I get there as in a Newcomers Welcome as it can be very scary when you have come away from your own country for the first time.
I managed to get a look at The Oyoun Village on the website but it would be better to find out more about it in person I will have to ask hubby to have a look when he has some spare time (at the moment none). From this thread we are steadily building a little group of ladies based in Al Ain so it will be great to have a get together when we are all settled. My husband and I are grandparents to two gorgeous little boys and another one (a boy) due anytime now but we are not the grey hair and slippers group, we love to socialise.
What does hubby do, I am from Glasgow originally, Larnie has Scottish connections and Blue Cat is married to a Scotsman so there is a good Scottish connection.
Keep in touch and hope you make it to Al Ain
