Laws Of the UAE - beware...!!
After reading the incident of the "codeine" incident in the paper, I thought it would be a worthwhile thread to post some of the UAE laws.
This should help either newbies to the country, or tourists.
anyone know of any laws people should be aware of ??
I read the other week that an Italian man was fined a few thousand for kissing a woman in a taxi. !

UAE to enact tough law on cyber crimes
By Shireena Al Nowais, Staff Reporter
Abu Dhabi: The UAE authorities will introduce a law to combat cyber crimes by imposing tough punishment.
Legal sources told Gulf News the law will be enacted by the end of the year and will fine or imprison individuals involved in cyber crimes.
Gulf News obtained a copy of the draft federal law that outlines cyber crimes and the proposed punishments.
One of these crimes is producing, publishing or downloading pornographic content for distribution. Any individual involved in such an act will be fined and/or imprisoned.
If the pornographic content involves juveniles, the individual will be imprisoned for not less than six months and fined a minimum Dh60,000.
The internet and other cyber technologies are not to be used to blackmail individuals or to publish scandal and information that violates the privacy of an individual, the law says.
Those who use the internet for blackmail purposes will be jailed and fined up to Dh50,000. If the blackmail was intended to force an individual into prostitution or into committing a crime, the prison sentence will increase to 10 years.
Individuals who publish content that attacks religions or supports terrorist groups and their activities will be jailed and fined.
"Never before have such individuals been punished," a legal source said. "The UAE authorities monitor websites and block those with offensive content, but they do not have the power to punish individuals who publish this content."
Foreigners will be deported and the machinery or equipment used in the crime will be confiscated. The place in which the crime was committed will also be shut down, says the law.
Residents were relieved by the news of the introduction of the law.
"Blocking websites does not make a difference because nearly everyone knows a way around the proxy," a female UAE national said on condition of anonymity.
"Nearly every security and virus program can be attacked. I am glad that the UAE will introduce such a law," she said.
The law also provides punishment for such crimes as hacking and spreading internet viruses. Anyone who introduces a virus that damages or disrupts a system will be fined Dh50,000.
Scary news for all the SAHM users, eh? heh heh.... this also meant that they are monitoring ALL internet activities.....

Re: Laws Of the UAE - beware...!!
Does anyone know any other laws that people need to be aware of ??
Can you actually get fined for holding hands for example ?
what the penalty if your caught with a femme in your apartment etc ?
Do you really go to prison for bouncing a cheque ??

I was out on Kuwait last year and they were publishing a section of translated Sharia law in the newspaper each day. It's fairly scary when you read some of the offences and the punishments especially when they relate to laws that would be fairly easy to break without an malintent...

I know for a fact that that they don't and can't monitor Sahm's activity, as it uses the unproxied line utilized by DIC and DMC. As a condition of its creation, DIC was given the right to a higher speed (some have said its the fastest broadband line in the world) and uncensored (as proxies slow down the connection) line.
Also, this is a law that affects people who download 'shady' content for DISTRIBUTION, it has no effect on anything that is for personal use (ha).
